The right's new conspiracy theory: blame left for Capitol riot

The cognitive dissonance is bewildering: The rioters are simultaneously patriots who did the right thing and "masquerading" leftists to be condemned?

Jan. 7, 2021, 8:39 AM EST
By Steve Benen

As much of the world recoiled after a pro-Trump mob, incited by the president, attacked the U.S. Capitol, it seemed inevitable that some on the right would claim it only appeared to be a pro-Trump mob.

Radical conservative activists and allies of President Donald Trump quickly began to spread disinformation about the Capitol riots Wednesday, claiming with no evidence that pro-Trump protesters photographed breaking into congressional chambers were anti-fascist activists.

Among the first hints of this that crossed my radar was a tweet from Rep. Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.), one of Congress' most right-wing members, who suggested that the riot incited by the president was an example of "leftist violence." Soon after, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) said on the House floor that he believes there were "antifa" members "masquerading as Trump supporters" committing acts of violence at the Capitol.

The idiocy spread quickly.

Lou Dobbs and Rep. Mo Brooks, R-Ala., discussed the possibility of antifa instigators' infiltrating the pro-Trump mob. And former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin made the same claim, telling Fox News host Martha MacCallum that it was unclear who was instigating the riots. "A lot of it is the antifa folks," Palin said, citing "pictures" she had seen. Laura Ingraham, one of the channel's primetime hosts, spent much of the hour of her show suggesting without evidence that the Trump protesters had been infiltrated by antifa.

Were there some Antifa rabblerousers?  Maybe.  But I'm not buying for a second that this was anyone other than pissed off and misled Trump supporters as the bulk of this madness.  The left tried the same thing with this summer's riots, saying it was the Proud Boys.  Maybe a few, but they weren't driving the bus...

Let's just call these people what they are on both sides.  Dumbfucks.

Everything the right claims is a conspiracy isn't that convenient.

There are multiple videos and photos that show Antifa and BLM protesters dressed up as MAGA supporters yesterday.

It's a pyop that's what. Look at how it all played out. Just as the republicans are starting their challenge of the vote bussed in Antifa members dressed as MAGA storm the capital building. 6 hours later every almost every republican changes their mind on challenging the election. We live in the matrix. This is all programming. It's all meant to divide us. Look at Biden's message a few minutes ago. Had this been blm they would've been treated worse. That's a lie, those people burned cites all summer including DC and not one of them was killed.

Trump used his supporters for 4 years and the left uses BLM and ANTIFA in the same fashion. It's a fucking joke

Wouldn’t it be embarrassing for Trump if after firing up his base by telling them to “fight like hell or they won’t have a country”,his supporters stayed home and the only ones to answer were Antifa?

Matt's synopsis was right on.  The part that I find humorous is the MSM immediate classification for the events.  All summer long it was protests, activists, peaceful resistance, 1st amendment, this is what fed up people look like.  And that was for 6 plus months of carnage and damage, hell Portland had 100 plus days of it.

Then day 1 in Washington, its mobs, domestic terrorists, rioters, disgusting actions.  Just zero integrity by the MSM.

And all they did was break one window and sit in Pelosi's chair. If this was BLM they would have went inside and trashed the joint and started it on fire!

Which would have been fucking awesome
