Platinum Contributing Member Highmark Posted October 3, 2019 Platinum Contributing Member Share Posted October 3, 2019 Not many people know an impeached President can re-run for the Presidency. In fact I have been reading where it would nullify his first term meaning he would be eligible for 2 more terms. The Senate can on voting to "convict" and mandate they cannot run but its not mandatory. Its an option that would throw a wrinkle in the Senate's proceedings. Its actually 2 separate votes. I don't see this as an issue with the dem's as of course they would want to stop him running again but the GOP would have a real issue here. https://www.snopes.com/news/2019/10/02/could-president-trump-be-impeached-and-convicted-but-also-reelected/ They also limited the possible punishments that the Senate may impose to “removal from Office, and disqualification to hold and enjoy any Office of honor, Trust or Profit under the United States.” But they only required that an impeached and convicted official “be removed from office” – but did not mandate that the person also be disqualified from holding a future office. Nowhere does the Constitution define the standards for disqualification. Moreover, the Senate has declined to establish a standard. But, as Ohio State University law professor William Foley points out, Senate procedures require separate votes to convict someone of an impeachable offense and to impose a disqualification penalty. So even if President Trump were impeached and convicted, there is the possibility that he could be reelected to the same office from which he had been removed. Anler
I think how govt works in general is "little known fact" among most americans but any president with any shame who as actually impeached would resign to save the country from the time and hassle of removing them from office. And with an election coming up its really foolish to proceed with this now as it probably wouldnt be over before the election by the time the Senate would vote and unless there was overwhelming evidence of criminal behavior they probably wouldnt remove him. Perhaps its just and election ploy to stick one of their lack luster flunkies in the oval office. Its all just so fucking disgraceful that this is what we have for govt now. Link? The 22nd amendment says right out of the gate that someone can only be elected to two terms.
