Platinum Contributing Member steve from amherst Posted April 8, 2019 Platinum Contributing Member Share Posted April 8, 2019 Federal authorities have joined the investigation into a string of fires that engulfed three historically black churches in southern Louisiana in the span of just 10 days. The fires began on March 26 in Louisiana's St. Landry Parish, a rural community north of Lafayette. Officials have not determined the cause of the fires, but have said they are unable to rule out the possibility of arson or that the three incidents were all related. "There is clearly something happening in this community," State Fire Marshal H. Browning said in a statement on Thursday. "That is why it is imperative that the citizens of this community be part of our effort to figure out what it is." The fires caused extensive damage to the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church and the Greater Union Baptist Church in the city of Opelousas, and the St. Mary Baptist Church in Port Barre. No deaths or injuries have been reported in either of the fires. Separately, officials say a fourth fire was "intentionally set" on March 31 at the Vivian United Pentecostal Church, a predominately white church roughly three hours north in Caddo Parish. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is now investigating the fires, as is the FBI. So far officials have not connected the four fires, identified a suspect or determined a motive. Platinum Contributing Member Highmark Posted April 8, 2019 Platinum Contributing Member Share Posted April 8, 2019 Yeah, pretty sad. Hope they catch them. I'll reserve judgment on motive and who might be behind this until they are caught.

Guest
The problem with the racial hatred is that INNOCENT PEOPLE get caught up in it. All it takes is ONE violent black guy to turn people against blacks. Most are probably ok people, but you will ALWAYS remember that bad one you dealt with. Just like if you have trouble with a Jew, a Muslim or ANYONE of any nationality. You will be tainted by that ONE person, and hate the nationality. Platinum Contributing Member Highmark Posted April 8, 2019 Platinum Contributing Member Share Posted April 8, 2019 Like I said. Better to wait and see who is doing this. Wasn't who one would expect the last time. https://www.clarionledger.com/story/news/2016/12/21/mississippi-church-burning/93282352/ State law enforcement officials say a member of the Greenville church that was burned and vandalized with "Vote Trump" in spray paint is in custody for the Nov. 1 crime. Greenville police on Wednesday arrested Andrew McClinton, 45, of Leland for setting Hopewell Baptist Church on fire, according to Warren Strain with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation. McClinton is charged with one count of first degree arson of a place of worship. Strain said the investigation is ongoing and declined to comment further. A motive has not been released. Hopewell Bishop Clarence Green could not immediately be reached for comment. However, Green told The Associated Press that McClinton is a member of the congregation. Kenya Collins, spokesperson for the city of Greenville, said McClinton was not currently being charged with a hate crime. "The charges that he received today, it was not a hate crime but we do not know if the federal government will pursue that as such because we do not have a motive yet," she said. McClinton, who authorities say lives approximately six miles from the church, is currently in the custody of the Washington County Detention Center awaiting an initial appearance in Greenville Municipal Court. Platinum Contributing Member steve from amherst Posted April 11, 2019 Author Platinum Contributing Member Share Posted April 11, 2019 'Evil Acts': Son Of Sheriff's Deputy Is Chief Suspect In Louisiana Church Arson Cases Updated at 12:55 a.m. Police have arrested the son of a Louisiana sheriff's deputy as a suspect in connection with three historically black churches that were torched in recent days. Officials identified the suspect as Holden Matthews, a 21-year-old white male from St. Landry Parish, a small community about an hour west of Baton Rouge. "I don't know what this young man's motive was, I don't know what was in his heart," Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards said at a news conference Thursday morning. "But I can say it cannot be justified or rationalized. These were evil acts." Matthews was charged with state crimes on three counts of simple arson on a religious building, Louisiana State Fire Marshal H. "Butch" Browning told reporters. Each charge has a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison. St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz said the suspect's father, Deputy Roy Matthews, "was shocked and hurt, as any father would be." The deputy knew nothing about his son's activities, Guidroz said. "And when I had to call him in and we sat him down and told him what we wanted him here for, he broke down."
