BMW to source more US Steel cause of tariffs

Source more US produced steel to offset higher cost import steel to build their cars for the US market.  This is to help keep the prices of a new BMW down from the high cost import steel if tariffs go through. These tariffs will become a huge win for the US middle class.

This is the Germans retaliation for US steel and aluminum tariffs enacted by trump,  is by buying more US produced steel and aluminum.

the EU retaliation is awesome...... buying US steel instead of importing steel to US....  that will teach Trump!!!!!

You’re missing the larger picture though.  This is referring to a plant that is in the US.  Are they going to buy US steel for their German plants?  No.  How about all the other industries that use steel in other countries?  Will they buy US steel when there’s a 25% tarrif on it or will they buy domestic steel?  How about all the other industries that are hit with tariffs like the soy bean farmers for instance?  One minuscule possible win doesn’t offset all the losses.

They didn’t buy us steel for their German plants before...  what they are looking to do is buy more us steel for their us plants.  BMW cars built in the US will use more us sourced steel.  That is the point...  nothing more.  And it’s a win for the US!!!!  US steel will have to increase production due to the increased demand.

Whoosh

Lots of companies in Canada, the EU and Mexico use US steel.  When it costs more because of recriprocal tarriffs imposed as a result of the US tariffs on our steel, demand will drop.

What don’t you understand?

Why are they buying US steel when it is already more expensive?

Who says it’s more expensive?

American and Canadian steel was basically the same price here prior to the tarriffs.  What happens now remains to be seen.

There will be no tariff on Canadian steel if it is the same price as American steel. So either you are incorrect about the price of Canadian steel , or you are worried about nothing.

Okay, let’s try this one last time.....

Prior to this tarrif talk, Canadian produced steel and US produced steel were the same price in Canada.

Now that the US has implemented a 25% tarrif on Canadian steel being imported into the US, Canada is going to reciprocate and slap a 25% tarrif on US steel being imported into Canada.  The Canadian tarrif on US steel imports is slated to go into effect on July 1.

On July 2, US steel theoretically will cost 25% more than Canadian steel in Canada.

Get it????

No , try this. IF Canadian steel hits the open market at the same price as American steel there will be no tariff on it. That is what you are missing. You are assuming there will be a tariff even if without one the price is the same. That is incorrect. Either Canadian steel is already cheaper or there isn't going to be a tariff.

Considering is a strong word, especially in of light how the price of US steel is going through the roof.

Tariffs and trade wars are never free.

BMW’s plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina, is the automaker’s largest in terms of production volume. It currently sources more than 70 percent of its steel from within the United States.

We want that number to be 100%

That’s unrealistic and not how trade works

It is totally realistic. We can produce better steel and a better price than any other nation that has any standards at all. No reason to import any steel

Drove buy that plant everyday last year for a couple of weeks.  Spartenburg is on fire.
