The parties can appoint whomever they want despite the primary results. That's what happened to Bernie Sanders against Hillary and Biden and going in to the Republican primary 2012 Ron Paul was beating Romney. Didn't matter. It's just an exercise so the parties can put forth a candidate who has the best chance of winning. But if the party doesn't like that person then they will just put the douchebag of their choosing in there anyway.
