so in this thread we are going to discuss the ford/mazda inline 4. first came out as the zetec for ford and then turned into the duratec, then the ecoboost. idk what mazda called it but for both companies this engine was introduced in the late 90s or early 2000s.

specifically if the reluctor wheels are different between the 2.3 and 2.0 duratec from 05 and 06. my race car is a 05 focus st 2.3 sedan, was told it has a bad motor but i am not sure. it is for sure out of time because my boss was looking at it and accidentally moved one cam shaft and it skipped some teeth. my parts car is an 05 or 06 focus 2.0l and a manual. the only difference i know between the 2.3 and 2.0 is that the 2.3 is internally balanced and has a slightly longer stroked crank.

someone told me they don't easily swap from model to model and year to year.  hopefully one of you experts and know it alls have experience with this engine and can tell me

Have a 2010 Duratec 2.0 with over 200K miles.  Still runs and looks like brand new.  Wish I could say that about the rest of the car!

I've done a power steering pump that went out, changed the water pump and thermostat proactively at 150k, and the serpentine belt a couple times.  Oh, and the valve cover gasket was leaking, new gasket fixed that.  Two sets of plugs and a set of coils, all done proactively.  All factory parts besides PS pump.

The AC system is a total POS that cost a ton to fix.  Not sure if they all used the same setup there?  Bad compressors and evaporators.

looking up more, the 2.3l comes with a balance shaft unless it was a ford ranger it came out of, the block off a 2.3 is 11mm taller to accommodate the 11mm longer stroke. heads and valve covers are slightly different. on another forum someone said you would need the ecu original to the displacement, ie 2.3 ecu only works on 2.3 engine. i am not sure if they are interference engines but the 2.3 supposedly has dished pistons and different compression. more than likely i will have to use the donor ecu. both are manual gearbox cars

thanks for your expert insight

Well, 25 years with Ford would indeed qualify me as an expert, but that pales in comparison to the fact that i have at least 5 test lights, so that pretty much makes me a fucking genius.

I'll translate the first post so it is clearer and more help can be offered.

"My shitbox escort has a blown engine after the expert at the shop I work at decided to do more than change the oil and filter on it.  This car dominates the local street (dirt actually) racing scene so it is more valuable than whale oil.  I need advice on which shitbox donor car engine would work best to get it back to dominating.  I really hope it's a 2.3 because the expert mechanic that destroyed my car reluctantly gave it up for free."

Best advice is to do an LS swap if you really want to maintain the cars local rep.
