At least 17 people were killed and over 40 injured in Chicago's street violence over the weekend.

Two Chicago newspapers that analyzed police data from Friday afternoon to early Monday called it 2016's deadliest weekend. Chicago police couldn't immediately confirm that, though a spokesman said their weekend homicide count from Friday midnight through Sunday was 18.

Either way, the toll surpassed the Chicago Tribune and Sun-Times' analysis of holiday weekends when violence typically spikes. The Tribune reports six people were fatally shot over Memorial Day weekend, five over Fourth of July, and 13 over Labor Day.

The October weekend deaths included seven people under 20 years old. Seventeen-year-old twin brothers were killed in a Sunday drive-by.

There's been a spike in street violence this year with over 600 homicides already.

Wow... sure glad I don't live in or near Chicago. 600 homicides this year already. WOW! Insane.

Toronto is concerned about the sudden spike hear. 2015 there were 19 deaths and 111 shooting injuries. 2016 has seen that jump to 32 deaths and 135 shooting injuries.

Toronto population is about 2.8M and Chicago population is about 2.7M

So for comparable sized cities Chicago sure is a lot more violent.

Houston population 2.3M homicides 303

Sizable demographic differences.  Keep in mind the complete Chicagoland population is around 9.9 million.

Like I said, significant demographic differences.   Take out the black on black murders and while not as low as Toronto it would be vastly different.

Chicago: 75% of Murdered are Black, 71% of Murderers are Black

32% of the population is black.  24% of the murders are by Hispanic's.   3.5% by whites.

The GTA population is over 6 million.  Sizable demographic differences is an understatement.  Most of the murders are committed by the same group as in Chicago, only we have much smaller numbers and give them more welfare.
