Compression Test...Best Method

Recommended Posts

You should do a cold test followed by a test at full operating temp

throttle held wide open by a tie wrap or someone else holding it.

All spark plugs removed.

Pull as hard as you can 5-6 times minimum.

Perform the test the same way of all cyls of all sleds or engines.

And keep in mind all gauges read differently. I have 2 and they read 15psi off from each other.

I have a friend who bases what fuel to use in his race sled off of comp reading from his gauge :flush:

Bingo, probably make sure the kill switch is off, but otherwise perfect.  Pull until the guage stops moving is what I go by.  You doing it on that IQR?  Have fun getting to that damn pto side jug.

As long as you have the flexible hose it will screw in easily.  Just like up the threads and twist the hose

Make sure you dont use any kind of extension on the hose before screwing it into the head.

Mine is still a very, very tight PITA with my compression gauge.

Cold or warm whatever. Hold the throttle open and test both cylinders. Youll know right away if there’s an issue if there’s a big variance between the cylinders

Like 10% difference or more  ain’t good.

Yeah roughly 10 psi variance becomes more concerning. You’ll start to notice it in the way it runs in the 30+ psi variance range

Hmm. Ive never had any trouble getting either of my compression testers threaded into the hole. The spark plugs and boots are a little tight but still no issue at all.

Maybe my hose is different.

I think my adapter is the issue.  LOL

So any adaptor between the head and the schrader valve in the compression tester will give false low compression readings. Most of those little chrome adaptors are at least 2.5cc in volume. When the installed volume of the head is only 20cc and you add a few more cc’s it will show 12-15psi less compression than there really is.

Careful not to tighten it down too much and collapse the O-ring too far.  If it has a rubber one.

Is this one better?

Nailed it.  Mine always reads 10 low.

Maybe I should use this one.

Dude I know what compression is.    I was making shit out of toolkit.

BTW you wouldn't have any OEM pistons around for a 2000 Mach Z?

just did my '07 a few weeks ago. cold, throttle closed, other plug out. didn't get above 90 which is low, but after 11,000 miles, it's no surprise.  not sure if throttle open would have made much difference.

Well add “compression test” to the long list of shit you know nothing about.
