I don’t know Ben,  you claim to be smarter than average, you claim to have some serious talent, yet you want to invest your money with some douche who had only his own interest at heart.  Why not nut up and buy a busIness in your own field?  Hell Articdipshit’s wife makes more than 98% of the people on this site and his earnings dwarf hers.  He’s self employed, you can do it too.

His money is in a 401k, which is a fiduciary account, and any money manager he may have for it only earns a few basis points on it regardless of what he's invested in.  Jesus you are one clueless angry dipshit.

I know this is simplistic but if the average company in the Dow is trading at 30 times earnings.  Wouldn't that logically mean that if you bought all of the company's stock, it would take 30 years to recover your investment.

However if you had real capital and decided to buy a small business that trades between 3 and 5 times earnings, it would take on average 4 years to recover your investment.

Well to start any small business thats worth a shit wont sell for 4 x's earnings, especially in a strong economic environment.

Don't tell him that.  Surely Amazon trading at 1000 x's earning has been a terrible buy.  It would take 1000 years to double your money.

Maybe you are the clueless dipshit.  Can the 401k invest in mutual funds which also charge a fee?  Can they have fee for buying and selling?

Yes, typically its 2% a year to both the fund company and the adviser as management fees, then 5% to buy and 3% to sell.

So someone who gets to keep charging ben every time he jumps in and out of funds is in for a good time.

Maybe in Canada, but not in the us.  Fees are much lower.  I get 50 basis points to manage a 401k.  In a privately held IRA the fee starts at 1.35% and goes down as assets go up, or you can buy A share mutual funds for 3.5-5.75% one time fee, and no charge to sell.  Either way hes off into left field.

Should be nothing for you to worry about then.  Why the alarm?

I’m not alarmed. So settle down sunshine. I still have a large portion of retirement assets tied up in WRS. I can’t touch that that or move it around. It’s a nice blend of stuff and it has been managed well. Still, it’s exposed.

I’ll get back in when and if the trade disputes are settled. The market will take off like a rocket following any moves such as that. You’ll probably see a 20% increase of the Dow. Then I’m out again.

It was a joke, see below.

For mutual funds fees, A series funds the mer's include management and trailer fees for advisers/brokers, typically about 2.2%,  F series funds strip out trailer fees (0.7% to 1.5%) and are paid out separately and negotiated based on net worth.  No load funds pay only management fees and possibly very little to a broker.   There is no fee to buy or sell these except for short term trading penalties.  Commissions for buying or selling mutual funds of any kind are virtually non existent in Canada.

F series sound like your privately held IRA, you can hold anything, mutual funds, stocks, bonds, etc.

Beta is in very left field.

Evidently there are 100 people on this site, you named 3 and said I called everyone a stalker.  I don’t recall saying arctic Trumpster and Zambo the clown were stalking me. But regardless in this instance I rightly accused stalker Dave and you are a liar. Just like trump.

What has the p/e on the small businesses you’ve looked at been?  Have you had offers on your business?   I’ve seen a lot of businesses for sale in the 3-5 range. I’ve had a lot of speculators call. They all claim 3-5 is the range. I said let me know if someone is in the 7 range otherwise don’t call again.

I haven’t looked since we started our new venture over a year ago  so maybe Trudeau has caused things to take off.  Who knows
