US immigration officers arrest Michigan doctor who has lived in US for 40 years

A respected doctor who has been in the United States for nearly 40 years has been picked up by American immigration agents after the Trump administration denied his attempt to renew his green card.

Lukas Niec, an internal medicine doctor known for long hours at the hospital in Kalamazoo, Michigan, was picked up by Immigration and Customs enforcement agents over the weekend.

He’s now reportedly sitting in a jail cell waiting for word on when he’ll be allowed to return to his normal life — or if he’ll allowed to do so at all.

Mr Niec, an internal medicine doctor at Kalamazoo’s Bronson Methodist Hospital, moved to the United States nearly 40 years ago when he was five years old. His parents brought him from Poland in 1979, alongside his sister, who said that they had packed just two suitcases before making the journey.

“In 1979, my parents were both doctors, left Poland, and took two suitcases and two small children — my brother was five, and I was six, and they came here for a better life for their kids,” Iwona Niec-Villaire, Mr Niec’s sister, told a local reporter.

But now Mr Niec is facing potential deportation after living here for the vast majority of his life.

“He doesn’t even speak Polish,” Ms Niec-Villaire, who is now an attorney, said.

The arrest was made Tuesday while Mr Niec was enjoying a day off with his daughters at a lake home he owns near Kalamazoo. Three Immigration and Customs agents entered the home and took him into custody.

“While Bronson Healthcare, like others, respects the laws and regulations concerning United States immigration, we are following the situation surrounding the detention of Dr. Lukasz Niec closely and are doing everything we can to advocate for Dr. Niec,” the hospital where he works wrote in a statement Monday. “We have been in contact with our elected representatives and we have our immigration counsel coordinating with Dr. Niec’s attorney to explore all options to secure his prompt release from detention.”

The Trump administration has overseen a spike in immigrant arrests over the past year, and US immigration services say that the priority for arrests and raids made is to target individuals with criminal or dangerous histories. While arrests have been elevated, there have been fewer over all deportations since President Donald Trump took office.

ICE did not respond to a request for comment about Mr Niec’s case, and for clarification on how his history qualified him as a target for the agency.

How should this man become an american citizen?  What's the path he is supposed to take?  Does anyone here actually know?

Is he a citizen of Poland?  He has children, is he or was he married....to an American citizen?  The place he works should be able to sponsor him.

Instead of ridiculing ICE for doing their job, let's see the solution.

Or do what he seemingly did and that was renew his green card every decade. Why not just apply for citizenship in the last few decades or so? I hear it takes a while but come on

Exactly.  He is a doctor, so he is obviously educated enough to know that he should do this.   Was there another reason that he didn't try to become a US Citizen, like tax benefits?  Other benefits?   Did he vote?  I have no sympathy for him, but I do feel for his kids.   Children have no bearing when their parents commit crimes in other circumstances, so why should it in this case?

got to figure there was a reason the green card renewal was declined and they pushed for deportation.  But it wouldn't tug on your heart strings during these debates if they actually laid out all the facts instead of just trying to stir up burt feelings of one side or the other.

I work with several polish people. most are direct polish immigrants. they have become citizens, they love america and some of them love debating politics as much as any here. guy in the next office over loves him some hillary and it makes me sick.. nice guy though.

I don't know the direct path but I do know it's attainable.

Makes sense to deport a hardworking doctor who’s known for the long hours he puts in.

Who needs lazy fucks like him anyway?

Like those who don't apply for permanent citizenship?

Who knows what his circumstances are, but when Trump and the Republicans are talking about a merit based immigration system on one hand, and arresting and deporting doctors on the other, it sure looks typical of the clusterfuck that this administration is.

The guy has a permanent green card, he had a couple of misdemeanors when he was a youth which he did a plea deal with nothing to go on his record, unfortunately for him the Federales don't recognize state and local laws and regs.

This guy could sit in jail for 6 months waiting for a hearing, it's fucked up.

More story at the link with an interview with his sister who is lawyer.

You apparently do not know the laws regarding this in Canada, do you?

Why is his sister not facing the same circumstances?

green cards (aka permanent resident alien) are "permanent" but still must be renewed every 10 and it's pretty much automatic,  right to the point you fucked up and made yourself ineligible for renewal
