This probability differs depending on pre-existing condition. The percentage shown below does NOT represent in any way the share of deaths by pre-existing condition. Rather, it represents, for a patient with a given pre-existing condition, the risk of dying if infected by COVID-19. PRE-EXISTING CONDITION DEATH RATE confirmed cases DEATH RATE all cases Cardiovascular disease 13.2% 10.5% Diabetes 9.2% 7.3% Chronic respiratory disease 8.0% 6.3% Hypertension 8.4% 6.0% Cancer 7.6% 5.6% no pre-existing conditions 0.9% *Death Rate = (number of deaths / number of cases) = probability of dying if infected by the virus (%). The percentages do not have to add up to 100%, as they do NOT represent share of deaths by condition.

Quote Trump disbanded NSC pandemic unit that experts had praised By DEB RIECHMANNMarch 14, 2020 WASHINGTON (AP) — Public health and national security experts shake their heads when President Donald Trump says the coronavirus “came out of nowhere” and “blindsided the world.” They’ve been warning about the next pandemic for years and criticized the Trump administration’s decision in 2018 to dismantle a National Security Council directorate at the White House charged with preparing for when, not if, another pandemic would hit the nation. “It would be nice if the office was still there,” Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the National Institute of Health, told Congress this week. “I wouldn’t necessarily characterize it as a mistake (to eliminate the unit). I would say we worked very well with that office.” The NSC directorate for global health and security and bio-defense survived the transition from President Barack Obama to Trump in 2017. Trump’s elimination of the office suggested, along with his proposed budget cuts for the CDC, that he did not see the threat of pandemics in the same way that many experts in the field did. “One year later I was mystified when the White House dissolved the office, leaving the country less prepared for pandemics like COVID-19,” Beth Cameron, the first director of the unit, wrote in an op-ed Friday in The Washington Post. She said the directorate was set up to be the “smoke alarm” and get ahead of emergencies and sound a warning at the earliest sign of fire — “all with the goal of avoiding a six-alarm fire.” https://apnews.com/ce014d94b64e98b7203b873e56f80e9a 13 hours ago, spin_dry said: What preparations did trump take on his first day of taking office? He crowed about the crowd size for the inauguration, then he went on to dismantle what Obama put in place. Let the record show. We had butt loads of vaccine stockpiled for H1N1. Some key terms are vaccine and stockpiled. We have neither in this case. I worked with people that managed the stockpiles for H1N1.(SNS) Warehouses and reefer trailers full of vaccine. Big bucks tied up in that operation and the stuff just sat. Threat over, and everybody just went back home. Kinda like crying wolf that time. I'm sure there were plenty of discussions about not making that mistake again. It actually isn't that hard to set up those operations when there is vaccine available. We have a lot of bright people ready for the job. Right now, the challenge is slowing down the spread. It takes time to develop vaccines. Slow down the spread and it will be manageable until the vaccine is ready. You will be amazed how fast things will happen when they find a vaccine/fix that works. The mess in Italy will be cited for generations. It will be the example of how not to handle a potential spread in our modern, mobile, society. Maybe we will slow it down enough here to avoid that kind of mess. Who knows?
