It's quite easy to be connected simultaneously with multiple connects each thought from another location. Like you said, why bother not sure what that gives them. VM is quite popular allowing multiple segments on the same device even running multiple OS on the same device. Then you can use high density processing as well with a blade chassis sliding in more capacity as needed. All mainstream technology widely in use.
