Since being sworn into office in 2011, Gov. Paul LePage has taken necessary steps to get Maine’s fiscal house in order and helped foster a more welcoming environment for business, significantly improving the condition of the state’s economy.

In fact, LePage’s administration has taken fiscal responsibility to a whole new level in Maine. In February, the Bangor Daily News reported that the Governor’s “rigid fiscal discipline” resulted in an all-time record for the amount of money in the state’s cash pool, reaching a mark of $1 billion. Additionally, LePage helped grow Maine’s budget stabilization fund, or rainy day fund, to $122 million after having fallen below $200,000 in 2008.

The praise doesn’t end there. The Cato Institute, a national public policy research organization, released a report in November 2016 that named LePage the most fiscal governor in the country, finishing well above his New England peers.

Maine can add another accolade to its collection after the Mercatus Center, a D.C. based free-market think tank, recognized the state’s fiscal improvements in its 2017 State Fiscal Condition report. While there’s still work to be done for Maine, the study highlights noticeable progress for the state as a whole. The newest edition of the report, which has been produced annually since 2013, shows Maine’s overall ranking improved from 43rd in 2016 to 35th in 2017.

The study measures financial health by assessing short and long-term debts, revenues, expenditures, cash, assets, and liabilities for each state, ranking them individually in the categories of cash, budget, long-run, service level and trust fund solvency.

Like many states, Maine’s ranking is hurt by growing fiscal obligations, such as unfunded pensions and healthcare benefits. However, Maine saw its budget solvency ranking improve by 27 places as a result of “increases in income and sales and use tax revenues totaling $257.9 million and a decrease in expenses of $208 million.”

This is the type of fiscal management Mainers voted for, both in 2010 and 2014. LePage’s efforts have completely reversed Maine’s budget woes and ushered in an era of fiscal responsibility that taxpayer’s can revere for generations to come.

The methodology employed in the Mercatus Center’s report and its full findings can be found here.

Do you think he could run for governor of CT next? :dunno:   We're a couple layoffs away from our bonds going to junk status.  And all Malloy can do is mumble.

These idiots, and I am being kind by using the word idiots, can't look around them and see the results of what Democratic control looks like, whether its local, state or federal.  Not like there's a pattern or anything.

Perfect example was the budget. It was a state shut down because the Democrats wanted the 3% tax on high earners. LePage and the Republicans said no fucking way. In the end the dems capitulated (to the minority party  ) and Maine keeps gaining steam.

while rough around the edges and shortsighted on some things he has done an excellent job stabilizing the state

Pubs better ind a good candidate to replace him or that hard work could quickly be tossed aside in favor of handouts and punishing the sucessful so no one wants to move business there.

Thats all well and good but Maine still ranks last or close to last in attracting businesses = jobs.

LePage can boast all he wants cutting STATE taxes but all he has done is pushed the burden to cities and towns. My town taxes have doubled in the last 5 years because of him cutting state taxes.

LePage has been a failure.

Poor Snake cant tell when he's been duped by Trump Jr. the discount outlet king

All we have to do is compare Maine and CT, who's running each state, and the results after 5-6 years.  CT is broke, our largest employers are leaving, we have a population/brain drain, and the taxes are out of control.

Lets face the fact the citizens of maine and the dem legislature aren't going to let lepage create a pro business environment,  the 3% tax surcharge being a solid example of that.  not coming out of their pocket so they vote it in meanwhile businesses aren't going to grow in Maine if you want to tax the execs who run it and make those choices to move/grow there.  NH has some quirks but the dems and pubs alike both see the fact we need business to want to be here and giving them tax advantages is the best way to do that. .

Does the citizenry have to right to impose a 75% tax?

What if they said 90%?

We elect people to take care of the purse, that is what a democratic republic is.  If people don't like the way government is spending or taxing, they elect people to change it.

sounds like you're bitching about not having others pay for your bills.

you could run for local office and vote to cut the local budgets to keep local taxes down.
