Graph by Ingrid Zabel for PRI's Earth@Home project (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 license) with data from the National Centers for Environmental Information More Total Rainfall Central New York is getting wetter. From 1950 to 2021, total annual precipitation in Tompkins County increased at a rate of 0.87 inches per decade. Even though precipitation is increasing, by the end of the 21st century Tompkins County is likely to experience more short-term drought. This can happen when higher temperatures lead to increased evaporation of soil moisture, outweighing the increased rainfall.

AK440
After more than a year of living in the Adirondacks, I’ve learned that winter is highly anticipated and celebrated by most. Months of powdery and icy conditions in the region have historically attracted outdoors enthusiasts to experience the park’s extensive cold season. But this winter’s record-breaking warm temperatures and minimal snowfall transformed the season, shortening outdoor recreation times and disrupting some events. Winter temperatures in the Saranac Lake area were the warmest on record this year. According to data from the National Weather Service, the average temperature from December to February was 24.1 degrees. The previous record was 23.5 degrees in the 2015-16 winter season. @krom doesn’t get shit for snow.

mnstang
That was a great year but the 18-19 year was great too, the year after that was great with 3+' of snow around Thanksgiving that stayed all winter. 20-21 wasn't awesome but you could still trail ride all over on good trails. 21-22 was another epic winter. The. Last year was one of the worst duds ever, possibly the worst across the state.. super el nino. 3 of the past 5 winters have been sweet. OMG climate change 😅

AK440
Projections for the future: Climate models show a future with less snowfall, less snow cover and accumulation, and a shorter snow season. Lake-effect snow could increase in the next few decades as the Great Lakes get warmer and freeze less often. However, by later in this century, more of this precipitation will fall as rain instead of snow. Snow-related recreation and tourism are key sources of jobs in the Adirondacks, Catskills, Central/Finger Lakes, and Great Lakes. However, as winters warm and the snow season shortens, some businesses such as ski resorts face difficulties or may be forced to close. Snow cover is also crucial for New York’s ecosystems. For example, less snow melting in the spring tends to result in lower water levels in streams and some wetlands, affecting the species that rely on them @krom doesn’t get shit for snow due to climate change.
