Fury as Texas homeowners hit with eye-watering electricity bills up to $17,000 due to ‘high demand’ during freeze

Wonder why more folks didn't have Generators? I have been out of power for 4 days some years ago and only used about 20-30 gallons of gasoline which we always have here anyhow. Bar down the road has a huge Diesel generator and because they keep tanks of fuel for the Groomers there they never are out of power.

During the Ice Storm of 98 we went without power for 14 days.

One other time for 5 days.

People who don't take personal responsibility for their own care get what they deserve.

Aside: NEVER TOUCH A POWER LINE EVER!

What’s their typical usage? You’d think at those revenues there’d be lots of plants being built. Is there something the green energy cult isn’t telling us?

I think Texas has 70-80 GW of generation name plate capacity...  about all of Canada’s hydro name plate capacity.  There fossil fuel generation froze and went dark when they had a demand of like 67 GW’s

Makes sense. Fossil fuels will meet the demand easy but they had poor planning

wind and solar would never meet that demand

$17000 for electricity for a couple days for a 1500 sq ft house.  Very reasonable from the fossil fuel generation that they have.  $17000 would put in a Tesla powerwall and a roof top solar that would have given them power for that house during the entire storm with no electric bill ever again.  Spacex had enough power and kept working on space stuff during the storm even though everybody was powerless around them

A generator would do it a lot better and cheaper plus it’ll work in a snow storm where solar panels won’t

Had a 22KW Generac whole house installed last summer. Used a 7,500 portable before that with a transfer switch. We lost our power a few times for over a week at a time during the winter in the past so running the portable was a pain but kept us warm and the well pump running.

So instead of buying that air fryer or a whatever new gizmo buy a generator.

Reason people got 17,000 electric bills is the power came on or they had power while fossil fuel energy was $9000 a MWh.  Solar and power wall works year round without the need for a generator.

How much for 22kw generac permanent install...  natural gas?

probably would have been greener and cheaper to do a solar/battery backup system vs 22 kw generac that requires annual maintenance, burn fuel that causes global warming and such.

Batteries are very hard on the environment. You could keep your house heated with a gas welder

Propane fired.

battery capacity is not quite there yet.

10.5K complete.

That is Cheaper then a powerwalls and solar but you should of done the right thing and better for the enviroment.  Plus solar and powerwall would have helped reduce coal power generation that impacts the climate

I looked at the Tesla system. Just not enough

Solar and battery back up is there and has been there.  Just cost a bit more.  Many in texas have proved it in this last storm.
I just shake my head with your life of privilege that constantly advocates for something that you didn’t do when given the opportunity.  Solar works daylight to dark even if it’s cloudy.  Battery allows you 24/7 which all helps to eliminate mans effect on climate.

The reason they got those bills is because they gambled on a variable rate and lost.
