We have a second retirement income plan that does not get funded by CPP called OAS (Old Age Supplement) that gets funded through regular taxation for those who make less in retirement. Once your income goes above around 72K its starts to get clawed back.

No doubt, I can't believe the number of people around my age I'll be 62 in March, that have no retirement, hardly any savings and owe a shit ton on their house and have credit card debt. I don't have new vehicles and as many toys as most of them but I don't need to work until I'm dead just to pay bills.

Aren't you a bit pissed when these are the idiots the government ends up having to lend a hand. The only difference is poor choices.

But would having tens of millions of seniors living in poverty or homeless be better? I know a ton of seniors who would be penniless if it wasnt for SS. I think it is better for society that we have this but it has been abused like everything else with phony disability claims and congress using it as a big pile of money. It could definitely be better.

If we did, retirement planning would be much easier. I plan to live another 30+ years. Barring an accident of some sort there is a very very good chance I will. It’s not a fact that I will collect social security for 20 years. I may not collect a penny from SS. I definitely dont mind paying into the program if it helps others and potentially helps me. I look at SS as a simple fee to help everyone live in a civilized society. Exactly
