Plantar Fasciitis

It started with me about a year ago. I couldn't figure out what was going on with my feet. They just ached everyday. Some days I could barely walk.  Went to a foot specialist and they tell me I have Plantar Fasciitis and I need orthotics. $700 and 2 sets of othotics later, no help. I've tried a half dozen "over the counter" replacement insoles and I'm surviving but not finding the relief I really want.

Sole brand has been the best I've found so far. I have them in 3 different pairs of shoes that I wear regularly. Still sore at the end of the day but they get me through.

Anyone else dealing with this? What have you found that works?

I had it last year bad on my left foot. Fine now. Do a lot of stretching of the hamstrings on your legs. I use the cadence inserts for my shoes. Threw out all my junk shoes and bought some better quality ones. The SAS (San Antonio shoes) I have are the best I’ve found. Super comfy. And the minute I put those inserts in it was like...wow.

I had it for 2 years, bilateral plantar fasciitis and bilateral Achilles tendonitis. Absolutely debilitating, to the point I was on crutches and getting cortisone shots in my feet. I had spent well over a grand in shoe inserts and other bull shit. And then a friend recommended a shoe he read about in a Maxim. Altra zero drop shoes. So I bought my first pair the next day. The Altra Olympus..And holy fuck, was a little strange at first, your heel sits lower than the ball of your foot and the toe area is super wide so as you walk your constantly stretching your Plantar and Achilles. Plus it was like walking with pillows on my feet. Ligitly can step on a Lego block and you won't even know they are so soft. Zappos usually has Altra's on sale. It's the only brand of shoe I buy now and have about 8 pairs. Try the Olympus model first, but as you get better you can get the more normal looking ones. I wear the Lone Peak and Superior now mostly.

I also would ice my feet 2-3 times a day, straight up bucket of ice water feet in it for 20min to reduce the inflammation, and I bought a couple things off Amazon I used to help stretch and massage feet and Achilles pictured below..But the #1 thing was those shoes, I was a 100% 2 weeks after I got those Altra Olympus shoes after 2 years of never ending pain.

When you tried the orthotic, did they say it would take time to get used to and start wearing them a few hours building up the time.  If so you went to someone who doesn't know what they're doing.  Lol. If done properly it should work immediately.

That's really interesting, thanks. I will look into those shoes and try some of those ideas.

I went in and was cast for the orthotics. In 2 weeks they were ready.

And yep, that's exactly what they said. Try them 2 hours, then move up to 4, 6, then all day. They will take time to get used to. The first set they did for me were just terrible. I tried them on at the clinic and I said "They hurt, especially the left side. Its digging in to my heel." The specialist there said "ya, they will feel a bit uncomfortable but you will get used to them." I went back after 2 days and said there is no way I can wear these. The guy checked and said "No, these were made wrong. Here, let me fix them a bit." He taped in some extra support for my arches and bent the heel pieces out flatter. I tried them for 2 weeks and said "They are a bit better but overall they suck. I can buy better stuff off the shelf at the drug store and the work wear stores."

So they agreed they weren't working and made me a second set. They cast my feet again and ordered this set from a different supplier. The second ones are better. They are made from memory foam but the arch support is too high now. Feels like I'm walking on hockey pucks and the memory foam provides cushion but no control of the foot as the shoe gets loose every time you step so my foot kinda slides around in the shoe. Doesn't inspire confidence.

They said if they don't work to come back and they will work with me to get it right but I don't have the time.

I've tried plenty of off the shelf insoles now and the Sole brand from Mark's Work Wear is the best I've found but I tear through shoes in about 3 weeks. I wear right through the back of the heels. I only wear leather running shoes as they stand up better than fabric shoes for what I do. I've tried 3 different brands of shoes and they all end up the same. I just ordered my 4th set in 2 months.

The clinic I went to suggested high quality running shoes so I went to running store and bought some shoes for $200 and that's where the second set of orthotics went. But they are too flimsy for work. I use them on the weekends sometimes.

Thanks, I will look for those. A customer suggested those too but he couldn't remember the brand name, just that symbol.

Seemed that my biggest issue was tightness in the back of my legs. Sounds odd but all those ligaments are connected. The stretching REALLY helped me. Put your foot up about even with your waist. Point the toe forward and stretch both legs three or four times a day.

I buy those inserts from footcaredepot.com. They’re like 40 bucks a set.

The place my wife and son ended up using said if anyone tells you that, run.

Sure enough theirs (orthotics) worked as stated, ie no adjustment period.

I used to try the other places as well and gave up, now I just use Advil for a few days and I'm usually good.  It would seem most of the public sector is using the free benefits to get their free shoes.
