Ryan to Trump: Don’t campaign with me

House Speaker Paul D. Ryan asked Donald Trump not to attend a campaign event with him Saturday in his home state of Wisconsin, according to two people familiar with the discussions, following the disclosure Friday of a 2005 video where the Republican presidential candidate makes lewd comments about women.

Ryan and Trump did not speak personally on Friday, one of them said.

Ryan said in statement late Friday that Trump “is no longer attending” the event — a festival in Ryan’s Wisconsin congressional district.

He decried Trump’s newly revealed comments in stark terms.

“I am sickened by what I heard today,” Ryan said. “Women are to be championed and revered, not objectified. I hope Mr. Trump treats this situation with the seriousness it deserves and works to demonstrate to the country that he has greater respect for women than this clip suggests.”

In a short statement issued moments after Ryan’s, Trump said his running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, “will be representing me” at the Wisconsin event while he remained in New York to prepare for Sunday’s town hall debate.

Trump’s campaign did not respond to a request for comment on whose decision it was for him not to attend.

What remains to be seen is whether the new revelations, first disclosed by The Washington Post, will trigger a broader abandonment of Trump by GOP officeholders.

[Trump recorded having extremely lewd conversation about women in 2005]

Republican lawmakers who were already skeptical of Trump were quick to condemn him, and some of that faction went further.

Sen. Mark Kirk of Illinois, who is running an uphill reelection race, called on Trump to drop out, and Utah Gov. Gary Hebert, who represents a state where Trump performed poorly in the GOP primary, said he would no longer vote for him.

But GOP congressional leaders who have endorsed Trump or said they would vote for them, while strongly condeming the newly disclosed remarks, stopped short of rescinding their support.

Many of them urged him to make a full public apology

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said the comments are “repugnant, and unacceptable in any circumstance” and made clear Trump’s brief statement would not suffice.

“As the father of three daughters, I strongly believe that Trump needs to apologize directly to women and girls everywhere, and take full responsibility for the utter lack of respect for women shown in his comments on that tape,” he said late Friday.

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif) also called on Trump to issue a “full and unqualified apology.”

The sheer vulgarity of Trump’s remarks — which included a discussion of the liberties he believed famous men could take with women — made the video difficult for GOP leaders to ignore.

Trump dismissed the remarks as “locker room banter” and said he apologized “if anyone was offended.”

Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash.), the highest-ranking woman in House GOP leadership, who said Trump “owes it to our party and our country to treat everyone respectfully” when she endorsed him in May.

“It is never appropriate to condone unwanted sexual advances or violence against women,” said McMorris Rodgers, the Republican Conference chairwoman. “Mr. Trump must realize that it has no place in public or private conversations today or in the past.”

Two senators who have already kept their distance from Trump — Kirk and Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) — were more sharply critical. “DJT is a malignant clown – unprepared and unfit to be president of the United States,” tweeted Kirk, who is seeking re-election in a heavily Democratic states and has already announced his intention to write in a presidential candidate rather than vote for Trump.

 - alright -

Is this the wrong time for me to point out a sanity check here?

I'm not the only one to observe that the Republican party is imploding before our eyes.

NBC's Chuck Todd said this AM that the entire GOP may be in jeopardy because of Trump.

 BUT !!

Am I way out of line to note the identity of the most recent Republican U.S. president?

"Major combat operations in Iraq have ended. In the battle of Iraq, the United States and our allies have prevailed." President Bush (younger) May 1, 2003 addressing U.S. Navy troops under a banner that said: "Mission Accomplished"

"... I've decided to work with our State governors ... to move 6,000 National Guard troops on the border, to help the current border patrol do the job until the new agents are trained. That makes sense to me, doesn't it?" U.S. President Bush (younger)

"Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we," U.S. President Bush ~Aug. 5, 2004

... disassemble, that means not tell the truth” Bush

Are we really supposed to think Trump is the CAUSE of this clash within the GOP?

Instead, is it possible Trump's nomination by Republican rank & file RESULTED from the literally disastrous 8 years of the Bush administration? Bush was not merely a consummate insider. GWB was a 3rd generation politician, foolishly nominated by Republican rank & file. And after the smoldering crater left by the GWB administration that put Barack Obama in office, Republicans nominated the most outsider: Donald Trump.

He's not fit for the office. As recently as this morning there's talk about replacing Trump on the ticket. Of course, it's too late. Due to ballot access laws etc, the GOP can't just swap in a champion like Speaker Ryan (an excellent choice).

Blaming Trump seems simplistic to me. Trump didn't nominate himself. And why would the GOP primary voters choose Trump? We're supposed to think President GWB, and 9/11, and Iraq had NOTHING to do with it?

Paul Ryan is not a bad guy. As far as Republicans go he is one of the more normal ones. He has never really liked Trump. If I was him I would feel the same way.

BY normal do you mean sneaking rights destroying legislation into bonding bills at the 11th hour? that kind of normal?

Crapo, Ayotte pull support for Trump

Washington (CNN)WARNING: This story contains graphic language.

Washington (CNN) — Two Republican senators on Saturday announced they were not supporting Donald Trump in the wake of sexually aggressive remarks Trump made in 2005.

Idaho Sen. Mike Crapo and New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte became the first sitting Republican senators to back away from Trump following the incendiary comments.

"I have reached the decision that I can no longer endorse Donald Trump," Crapo said in a statement. "This is not a decision that I have reached lightly, but his pattern of behavior has left me no choice. His repeated actions and comments toward women have been disrespectful, profane and demeaning."

He requested Trump step aside so Republicans can "put forward a conservative candidate like Mike Pence who can defeat Hillary Clinton."

Soon after Crapo's announcement, Ayotte also said she would not vote for Trump.

"I'm a mom and an American first, and I cannot and will not support a candidate for president who brags about degrading and assaulting women," Ayotte said in a statement.

In August, Ayotte had said she would vote for Trump but not formally endorse him. She said Saturday she will instead be writing in Trump's running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, on Election Day.
Friday night, House Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz became the first sitting Republican congressman to pull his support for Trump in the wake of the 2005 video, which was surfaced by The Washington Post earlier in the day.

Chaffetz, the House Oversight Committee chairman who led the Hill investigation into Clinton's email use while secretary of state, continued: "So I'm not going to put my good name and reputation and my family behind Donald Trump when he acts like this, I just can't do it.

Dwindling Support

Spencer Zwick, a top Republican fundraiser, said that “major GOP donors are pulling support from Donald Trump and are now looking to fund an effort to back someone else as the Republican nominee.”

Elected Republicans calling on Trump to step aside included Senator Mike Lee of Utah, who never endorsed the real-estate developer. “It’s time for us not to settle. It’s time for us to expect more,” said Lee, who said “someone else” should become the standard-bearer.

Others calling for Trump to step aside included Representatives Mike Coffman of Colorado and Barbara Comstock of Virginia and even Martha Roby from staunchly conservative Alabama. They also included Senators Ben Sasse of Nebraska, Mark Kirk of Illinois, and Mike Crapo of Idaho. Sasse urged Trump to “let Mike Pence try,” and Crapo said the party should “put forward a conservative candidate like Mike Pence who can defeat Hillary Clinton.”

Representative Jason Chaffetz of Utah withdrew his endorsement of Trump and said he wished Pence was at the top of the ticket.

“We’re going to have to figure that out at the -- in the coming days and weeks, but it is tragic the way it is right now,” Chaffetz said on CNN.

New Hampshire Senator Kelly Ayotte, who is facing a tough re-election contest, also withdrew her support of Trump, days after she said she misspoke by calling him a role model for children in a televised debate. She’ll write in Pence’s name on her ballot, she
