Neal it was also not designed to be billion in the red. it was designed to give all access to basic services needed at the time but it was not designed to operate at these kind of losses but like everyone benefit costs were ignored and while the world changed they remained trapped in the past. Reality is with tech changes they could move to a 3 day a week service with no real material effect on anyones lives other than older people needing to learn how to trust online bill pay and having to find somewhere else to chitchat with their friends but yet every time someone calls for a reduction in delivery days or closing the excessive amount of post offices old out of touch people whine. I don't think it was really intended to serve private industry delivering packages.

End of the day we need to decide how important the USPS is within todays society because even charging the same as Fedex and UPS I would bet they still lose money vs those 2 making it but it's spreading costs over more packages which if we want to keep this national distribution network together may actually be the best choice.
MiSledder
When I sold on eBay it was widely known to use USPS as much as possible because it was subsidised and it was cheaper, and Infact my experience in shipping (and I've shippd a few hundred things) USPS is a lot cheaper So is Amazon not using a heavily subsidised service ? This isn' true? Edited April 5, 2018 by MiSledder

Didn't Amazon start as a book seller? The cost to mail books and periodicals always has been cheaper then reg mail. Are they paying those rates on everything? Are they paying those rates on everything? amazon business model has been constantly shifting over the time since they were a book seller and they have been constantly negotiating and changing how they ship over time. over the years i have gotten packages USPS, UPS and Fedex. Even today the biggest piece of their shipping is still UPS although some of thats UPS delivered by the USPS. got 3 things today, 2 in the mail and one that was UPS and thats typical with small items to go USPS
