Doesn’t take to many checks with more OT hours in 2 weeks then 80 hours. To get a couple hundred hours of OT. Even if a tech stays off the tool trucks for anything other than specialty shit, tools aren’t cheap and that’s just the beginning. If a shop isn’t spending the money to stay current with equipment and training, the techs suffer first. Plus, a good tech is worth good money. I’m lucky to finally have decent pay and on a decent pay schedule. Flat rate/commission based pay systems usually run people out of the business long before they should be many times. When I need work done I don't look for the cheapest shop. My stuff goes to not only the most qualified shop, but to a shop that stands behind their work. Even the best techs can have call backs. It's an imperfect world. Shit happens. What I dislike more than anything is a service writer or tech that makes excuses. In my experience and in conversations with others, the main issue today is that there's a lack of true technicians. Meaning someone that can go beyond reading a code and simply start throwing parts at the "perceived" problem. I'm not shitting on auto mechanics. It's a tough job. The conditions, the wear and tear on the body, dealing with shitty managers and owners. I'm still from the school where you give your guy a nice tip for a job well done.

Except he worked 32 hours in that week and you had to work 47.5..So you work a hair shy of 2 more full work days a week than he did................. Pretty cool how basic math works isn't it.. Another perk, my tech works in a spotless climate controlled environment year round and his office is exotic cars not a fiberglass bucket outside in what ever mother nature decides to deliver that day 1

I probably would get a little overwhelmed tho with all the double shot requests and other lingo asked of me. I'd catch on real quick and make a fine coffee guy! Plus even with the start of my male pattern thinning of hair I could still do a comb over man bun. I'd fit right in. Are you saying that I'd have to go further west than Idaho? I did, that's their base, but they are flat rate, so their hourly rate increases based on what they turn, so my one tech had a great 4 day week, but if he wouldn't have taken Monday off and would have been able to complete the new twin turbski job on the S8 he would of been at an hourly rate of 89/hr (50% of the shops hourly labor rate), FYI, that's $10/hr more that you make but you would beworking an extra day a week than he does out side in a fiberglass bucket at what ever time of the day you would be required to be there, he just works 8-5 m-f in a nice clean heated or air-conditioned shop........... Guessing you're "on call" too, where you can't be far away and obviously drink if you wanted too

He is likely over 200k doing hvac. 80k per year gross is on the low end for the trades. Don’t take offense to it but it is just a fact. It’s why the industry has staffing troubles.
