The cost to protect presidents has skyrocketed due to partisan divide and identity politics. It's not to protect the President so much as it is to protect this country from fracturing and going full social breakdown. The cost skyrocketed under Obama and he is now the most expensive ex president to protect. Trump will top all of this as his successor will also. Cheaper just to assassinate and start over.
