Here is what I think I'd do to make the race weekends more interesting. Qualifying: 40 car field = 4 10+ car heats (laps depend on track, but 4 heats max). What heat you end up in and where is based off your 2 hour open practice times (or however you wish to do practice). Top 7-8 cars from the heats are guaranteed a spot in the field, the rest end up in a LCQ shootout. 1st place car in a heat redraws for spots 1-4, 2nd is 5-8, etc. 41st spot is previous champions provisional. Race day: Take away the "Lucky Dog" and wave around. You spin someone out (cause a crash, etc), you get a black flag - back of the line for you. You fail post race tech, DQ. $0 paid, 0 points awarded. Pre-race tech violations are irreverent for fines. Don't be afraid of the black flag. Restarts are leader in a row to themselves, everyone else is doubled up behind them. You don't need to run 4+ laps of caution for a spin. Line them back up and send them. Points + Chase + general: Get rid of some of the 1.5 mile tracks, especially if they are on the schedule twice. Chase is 8 races, 2 short tracks, 2 twisties, 2 super speedways, and 2 1.5 milers or so. Run a set of each style, eliminate, 2nd set. Give more points to the winner. Seriously, you win a race and the second place guy can outscore you in points by a possible 4 points? I think NASCAR needs to get back to a more "short track" feel. They are so far removed from every other form of oval racing in North America that what you see at your local track, even NASCAR sanctioned short tracks, is nothing like what you see on TV. If I'm a new NASCAR fan and load up the family to go to the local track for a nite, I'm going to be like "WTF, where is the lucky dog and what is this thing called a heat race?"

Good to see them farming the track. Should make it racier if they farm it top to bottom, at least the first half of the race. Side note, if I finished 4th and 5th in the LCQ and got bumped out by provisional drivers, I'd be a little peeved.

I just woke up from a post bike ride nap and missed the heats. Kinda pissed about that. Bobby is a pretty good guy from everything I see. Races for his family's dirt late model team all year round and his day owns a chassis building business too.
