  8. Updated at 3:57 p.m. ET In what London police are calling a "terrorist-related" incident, two people were stabbed in Streatham, a south London district on Sunday. A third person has minor injuries, believed to have been caused by glass following the discharge of the police firearm, according to a statement from Metropolitan Police Deputy Assistant Commissioner Lucy D'Orsi. All three victims were taken to south London hospitals. One man is being treated for life-threatening injuries, one woman has injuries that are not life-threatening and another woman has minor injuries, police said. Armed officers shot a male suspect, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said a device was found strapped to the body of the suspect but officers were able to quickly establish it was a "hoax" device. "The incident was quickly declared as a terrorist incident and we believe it to be Islamist-related," D'Orsi said. The BBC reported the suspect was actively being surveilled by police at the time of the incident. An eyewitness told the UK's PA Media that a person appearing to be an undercover police officer chased the man, who was armed with a machete and wearing silver canisters on his chest.
  9. China has now confirmed more than 17,000 people have the Wuhan coronavirus, representing a huge leap since last week, when the country reported 4,400 cases. Chinese health officials said Monday morning that 2,829 new cases were diagnosed in the past 24 hours alone. The respiratory virus has now killed more than 360 people — all but one of them in China. Outside of mainland China, nine countries or regions are reporting double-digit cases of the coronavirus, led by Japan with 20, according to a global dashboard created by the Johns Hopkins Whiting School of Engineering. China's stock markets were pummeled Monday — the first day of trading since the Lunar New Year holiday — with the Shanghai Composite Index falling by nearly 8%. Trading was halted for hundreds of Chinese companies after prices for their stocks dropped by 10% — triggering a mandatory hold. Despite those sharp falls, many markets in the U.S. and elsewhere were steady. The S&P 500 rose by around 1% in its first hour of trading, and the Euro Stoxx 50 Index also rose slightly. The U.S. currently has 11 confirmed cases of the 2019-nCoV virus, with patients reported in California, Massachusetts, Arizona, Illinois, and Washington state. And it has imposed new restrictions on people who want to travel from China to the U.S.
  10. Natalia Zinets, Babak Dehghanpisheh KIEV/DUBAI (Reuters) - A leaked audio recording of an Iranian pilot talking to the control tower in Tehran shows that Iran knew immediately it had shot down a Ukrainian airliner last month, despite denying it for days, Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelenskiy said. On the recording, played on a Ukrainian television station late on Sunday, the pilot of another plane can be heard saying he saw “the light of a missile” in the sky before Ukrainian International Airways flight 752 crashed in an explosion. Tehran blamed the Ukrainian authorities for leaking what it described as confidential evidence, and said it would no longer share material with Ukraine from the investigation into the crash. All 176 people aboard the flight were killed when the plane crashed shortly after takeoff en route from Tehran to Kiev on Jan. 8. The leaked audio “proves that the Iranian side knew from the start that our plane had been hit by a missile,” Zelenskiy said in a television interview. “He says that ‘it seems to me that a missile is flying’, he says it in both Persian and English, everything is fixed there,” Zelenskiy said. After denying blame for three days, Iran acknowledged shooting the plane down, saying it had done so by mistake while under high alert, hours after it had fired at U.S. targets in retaliation for a U.S. strike that killed an Iranian general. Iran has said it worked as quickly as possible to determine what happened to the plane. The Iranian commander who first acknowledged the plane had been shot down said he informed the authorities on the day of the crash.
  11. (Reuters) - Wall Street main indexes rose 1% on Monday following their worst week in at least four months as Amazon and Nike gained and U.S. factory activity showed a surprise rebound. ISM data showed the manufacturing sector expanded in January after five straight months of contraction, offering hope that a prolonged slump in business investment has probably bottomed out. Alphabet Inc (GOOGL.O) gained 2.6% ahead of its quarterly results, which will wrap up earnings for the so-called FAANG group of stocks. A 4.1% rise in Nike Inc's (NKE.N) shares after JP Morgan added the footwear maker to their focus list provided the biggest boost to the Dow Industrials .DJI. The consumer discretionary index .SPLRCD gained 1.6%, the most among the 11 major S&P indexes.
  12. BEIJING/SHANGHAI (Reuters) - China accused the United States on Monday of whipping up panic over a fast-spreading coronavirus with travel restrictions and evacuations as Chinese stocks plunged on the first day back from the extended Lunar New Year holiday. The death toll in China from the newly identified virus, which emerged in Wuhan, capital of the central province of Hubei, rose to 361 as of Sunday, up 57 from the previous day, the National Health Commission said. The World Health Organization (WHO) last week declared the flu-like virus a global emergency and it has since spread to 23 other countries and regions, with the first death outside of China reported on Sunday, that of a 44-year-old Chinese man who died in the Philippines after travelling from Wuhan. Wuhan and some other cities remain in virtual lockdown with travel severely restricted, and China is facing increasing international isolation.
