hayward
There is a .17 centerfire and a .17 rimfire. Not sure which you're asking about.

Havn't seen a center fire version in 25 years, buy my memory serves me that it was a pretty potent little animal. My rimfire took down a deer with a shot behind the ear at 150 yards. I suppose you'd have to treat the coyote the same.

It leaves a nice clean hole with no pelt damage. Not a good round for brush. One blade of grass and the round will disintegrate because of its high velocity
Platinum Contributing Member Jimmy Snacks Posted January 6, 2023 Platinum Contributing Member Share Posted January 6, 2023 (edited) HMR is a rimfire..The Hornet is a centerfire and guessing the Remington is as well. Remington is faster than the Hornet. Edited January 6, 2023 by Jimmy Snacks

hayward
The hmr is a head shot only kind of round pretty much. Even groundhogs i've shot in the body, they always make it back down the hole. In the head though, they don't move off the spot.

I’m not sure if the round is available now, but I shot the 30.06 accelerator rounds during the “70’s for fox. It was a .22 round fired out of a 30.06. The bullet was encapsulated in a polymer sabot that the bullet shed after leaving the barrel. It was also a hyper velocity round that allowed the dual use of a deer rifle for varmint and pelting. I believe they took the round off the market.
nrcptr
I like the .17HMR (rimfire). I have it in a savage bolt action. The gun shoots nice, I just fucking hate the safety on it. I think the wing safety on a model 70 is the best safety for a bolt action. My 2 cents
