Intellectually-honest and intellectually-dishonest debate tactics

Just browsed through it, but yeah , what passes for honest debate is ridiculous

One of my favorites on here is ............."that is so stupid, I can't respond" or just the

I like having an honest debate.  It makes the conversation much more informative.

I must say that after reading through this, I can be guilty of some of the dishonest tactics as well, but I try not to do them and I will try even more after reading through that piece.

Maybe so...........but it is not debating.

Well if someone is so stupid to support some asinine position to begin with, I have no interest in a debate with an obvious idiot :)

Yeah, I have as well.

I have made an effort in the last few years to not name call.

I rarely see you name call and you probably catch as many insults as anyone on here, even when you haven't posted in the topic.

Good for you for being honest enough to admit that you are guilty of some of these tactics, most everyone is to some degree myself included.

I really don't know where the notion that being wrong about something is such a horrible thing that a person can't admit they are wrong when proven so.

I agree.  Everyone knows it takes a bigger man to admit when he is wrong about something.

Nice post!  I can certainly appreciate intellectual debate (Intellectually Honest debate).  But it is almost impossible to find on the internet...especially forum boards like this that aren't really meant for that type of debate and when they do tend to start, get muddled up in all the muck with everybody chiming in.  Not to mention, let's all be honest, do we really want a long and intellectually stimulating (and taxing) debate on here?  Not usually.  While educational and certainly more civil, they usually aren't as much fun.  And that's what we are all here for, right?

So, my answer is to walk the line between and be prepared to do both.  Sometimes I get surprised and end up in a nice back and forth that actually starts to make me re-think something and begin a bit of research into the new fact(s) that were presented to me.  It's how we can all gain intelligence.  But, those moments are few and far between and just when I think I am at the precipice, SHIT-SHOW CITY....and away we go......:duel:
