My wife has a smart phone..can I link it to my laptop to get on the internet while we are away camping?

Its called tethering.  Most phones will let you create a wifi hotspot or tether through the USB.  I do it all the time.

Right now I run my laptop through my wireless router if that means anything.

So you will setup the phone to have its own SSID and password.  You will them connect to that the same as your router.

Dude..I tried just to answer her smart phone the other day and failed.

Her son and gf are coming over later today or early tomorrow morning..maybe they will know how to set the phone up.

If all else fails find an average 14 year old.

One more question,

she has 2 gigs a month on her plan..she usually only uses 1/4 of that..how much internet time would be left for being on this site roughly?

Being on this site would use very little since you are normally just browsing.  She should get text messages when she gets over 50% and again closer to her limit.
