So Canadians

Recommended Posts

Long ago the government thought that what would be best for the children of the native Indian people would be to take them from their homes and families and have them in residential schools where the children lived full time and attended classes. Some have suggested it was the opinion of the day that it was felt it was the only way to ensure that they actually got an education and would be able to have a future where they would be able to get and keep a job.

Allegedly they weren't getting an education at home with most not learning to read, write or do basic math.

Indian residential schools operated in Canada between the 1870s and the 1990s. Children between the ages of 4-16 attended Indian residential school. It is estimated that over 150,000 Indian, Inuit, and Métis children attended Indian residential school.

Apparently these kids were scarred and traumatized for life to the point that the government felt it necessary to issue a formal apology for mistreatment of these people and also paid them for their trauma.

It is in the news now because the former PM issued an apology that didn't include the residential school attendees in Newfoundland and Labrador. Trudope has now apologized and paid money to the residents of the Newfoundland and Labrador schools EVEN THOUGH NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR WERE NOT PART OF CANADA AT THE TIME.

What Trudope does best is hand out money for any perceived injustice even if Canada had nothing to do with it.

A good idea that started for good reason but a few bad apples spoiled the bunch. Some bad shit happened but a lot is over blown.

the chugs claim it was an attempt to rid them of their culture, citing activities like cutting the native children’s hair off.

in reality many could not read, write or speak. These children were becoming largely Feral. They cut their hair off because they were loaded with lice.

I agree with most of that.  Speaking from Western Canadian perspective, the resi schools were originally set up, it was unpopulated frontier land out here.  The first thing that European settlers did when they arrived in an area was build a church and a school.  The Natives had no such concept and thus the Government of the day saw resi schools as the only practical way nomadic Native kids would ever be educated.  There was some virtue in the original idea, but how it was implemented was pretty much a complete disaster.  You cannot argue that it has fucked up generations of Native people and will continue to for some time to come.

One other thing to note is the last resi school was shut down in 1990, but they were under band control since 1973.
