  1. Kim threatens to use nukes amid tensions with US, S. Korea HYUNG-JIN KIM Wed, July 27, 2022 at 9:35 PM SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un warned he’s ready to use his nuclear weapons in potential military conflicts with the United States and South Korea, state media said Thursday, as he unleashed fiery rhetoric against rivals he says are pushing the Korean Peninsula to the brink of war. Kim’s speech to war veterans on the 69th anniversary of the end of the 1950-53 Korean War was apparently meant to boost internal unity in the impoverished country amid pandemic-related economic difficulties. While Kim has increasingly threatened his rivals with nuclear weapons, it’s unlikely that he would use them first against the superior militaries of the U.S. and its allies, observers say. “Our armed forces are completely prepared to respond to any crisis, and our country’s nuclear war deterrent is also ready to mobilize its absolute power dutifully, exactly and swiftly in accordance with its mission,” Kim said in Wednesday's speech, according to the official Korean Central News Agency. He accused the United States of “demonizing” North Korea to justify its hostile policies. Kim said regular U.S.-South Korea military drills that he claimed target the North highlight U.S. “double standards” and “gangster-like” aspects because it brands North Korea’s routine military activities — an apparent reference to its missile tests — as provocations or threats. Kim also alleged the new South Korean government of President Yoon Suk Yeol is led by “confrontation maniacs” and “gangsters” who have gone further than previous South Korean conservative governments. Since taking office in May, the Yoon government has moved to strengthen Seoul’s military alliance with the United States and bolster its own capacity to neutralize North Korean nuclear threats including a preemptive strike capability. “Talking about military action against our nation, which possesses absolute weapons that they fear the most, is preposterous and is very dangerous suicidal action,” Kim said. “Such a dangerous attempt will be immediately punished by our powerful strength and the Yoon Suk Yeol government and his military will be annihilated.” South Korea expressed “deep regret” over Kim’s threat and said it maintains a readiness to cope with any provocation by North Korea in “a powerful, effective manner.” In a statement read by spokesperson Kang In-sun, Yoon’s presidential national security office said South Korea will safeguard its national security and citizens’ safety based on a solid alliance with the United States. It urged North Korea to return to talks to take steps toward denuclearization. Earlier Thursday, South Korea's Defense Ministry repeated its earlier position that it's been boosting its military capacity and joint defense posture with the United States to cope with escalating North Korean nuclear threats. In April, Kim said North Korea could preemptively use nuclear weapons if threatened, saying they would “never be confined to the single mission of war deterrent.” Kim’s military has also test-launched nuclear-capable missiles that place both the U.S. mainland and South Korea within striking distance. U.S. and South Korean officials have repeatedly said in the past few months that North Korea is ready to conduct its first nuclear test in five years. Kim is seeking greater public support as his country’s economy has been battered by pandemic-related border shutdowns, U.S.-led sanctions and his own mismanagement. In May, North Korea also admitted to its first COVID-19 outbreak, though the scale of illness and death is widely disputed in a country that lacks the modern medical capacity to handle it. “Kim’s rhetoric inflates external threats to justify his militarily focused and economically struggling regime,” said Leif-Eric Easley, a professor at Ewha University in Seoul. “North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs are in violation of international law, but Kim tries to depict his destabilizing arms buildup as a righteous effort at self-defense.” Experts say North Korea will likely intensify its threats against the U.S. and South Korea as the allies prepare to expand summertime exercises. In recent years, the South Korean and U.S. militaries have canceled or downsized some of their regular exercises due to concerns about COVID-19 and to support now-stalled U.S.-led diplomacy aimed at convincing North Korea to give up its nuclear program in return for economic and political benefits. During Wednesday’s speech, Kim said his government recently set tasks to improve its military capability more speedily to respond to military pressure campaigns by its enemies, suggesting that he intends to go ahead with an expected nuclear test. But Cheong Seong-Chang at the private Sejong Institute in South Korea said North Korea won’t likely conduct its nuclear test before China, its major ally and biggest aid benefactor, holds its Communist Party convention in the autumn. He said China worries that a North Korean nuclear test could give the United States a justification to boost its security partnerships with its allies that it could use to check Chinese influence in the region. North Korea recently said it is moving to overcome the COVID-19 outbreak amid plummeting fever cases, but experts say it’s unclear if the country can lift its strict restrictions soon because it could face a viral resurgence later this year. During Wednesday’s event, Kim, veterans and others didn’t wear masks, state media photos showed. On Thursday, North Korea reported 11 fever cases, a huge drop from the peak of about 400,000 a day in May. North Korea has rejected U.S. and South Korean offers for medical relief items. It has also said it won’t return to talks with the United States unless it first abandons its hostile polices on the North, in an apparent reference to U.S.-led sanctions and U.S.-South Korean military drills.
  2. Tony Dow, 'Leave It to Beaver' star, has died By Scottie Andrew Updated 4:25 PM ET, Wed July 27, 2022 UNITED STATES - AUGUST 27: LEAVE IT TO BEAVER - "Wally's Track Meet" 1/28/61 Tony Dow (Photo by ABC Photo Archives/Disney General Entertainment Content via Getty Images) (CNN)Tony Dow, an actor and director best known for portraying Wally Cleaver on the sitcom "Leave It to Beaver," died Wednesday morning, according to his manager Frank Bilotta, citing Dow's son Christopher. He was 77. "Although this is a very sad day, I have comfort and peace that he is in a better place. He was the best Dad anyone could ask for. He was my coach, my mentor, my voice of reason, my best friend, my best man in my wedding, and my hero," Christopher Dow said, according to a statement that Bilotta shared on Tony Dow's official Facebook page. News of the actor's passing comes one day after a premature announcement of his death. Dow revealed in May he had been diagnosed with cancer and was receiving hospice care this week, according to his son. Dow was thrust into stardom at age 12, when he was cast on the soon-to-be-smash sitcom "Leave It to Beaver." In the role, Dow helped create the archetype of a suburban nuclear family and became a household name to millions of viewers. The show ran from 1957 to 1963. In a January interview with CBS Sunday Morning, Dow recalled learning over a hamburger and malt that he was offered the part after auditioning on a whim. "There went my life," he said. Wally Cleaver, the straight-arrow teenage son, star athlete and Boy Scout, became inextricably tied to Dow, who said he struggled to stand on his own. "It's sad to be famous at 12 years old or something, and then you grow up and become a real person, and nothing's happened for you," he told CBS. Dow, who said he experienced undiagnosed depression from age 20 to age 40, spoke out for decades about his mental health challenges, long before it was common for celebrities to disclose that information publicly. In 1993, he was an honorary speaker at a convention for the National Depressive and Manic-Depressive Association. "I realize there's a perceived irony about this," he told the Baltimore Sun of his depression in 1993. "You know, the fact that I was in a TV program that epitomized the supposed ideal world of the '50s, and here I'm suffering from depression. But I'm just one of millions." Dow told CBS that once he accepted his diagnosis and began treatment, he found hope. He channeled that hope into art, too, sculpting ornate pieces at his home studio. "I think people should take the leap of faith that they can feel better," he said. Dow continued to work in Hollywood, taking parts in TV series and even reprising his role in "The New Leave It to Beaver" in the 1980s. He also directed episodes of series like "Harry and the Hendersons," "Coach" and "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine." Jerry Mathers, who starred opposite Dow as Beaver on their hit sitcom, told fans earlier this month that he'd been in contact with Dow, whose managers said had been "in and out of the hospital with various complications and treatments."
  3. No, we're not in a recession, Biden administration tells U.S. voters Trevor Hunnicutt Tue, July 26, 2022 at 2:48 PM By Trevor Hunnicutt WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. economy is plagued by inflation and suffering from fallout from Russia's war in Ukraine - but it's not in recession. That's the message from White House officials. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, economic adviser Brian Deese and Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo have spoken out in recent days ahead of data on Thursday that may show that gross domestic product (GDP) shrank from April to June. The Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta's GDP forecast suggests a 1.6% decline. That would mark the second quarter of GDP decline in a row. While a broad rule of thumb holds that two consecutive quarters of GDP drops signal a recession, the strong U.S. job market means this may be the rare moment when that is not enough for economists to declare the world's largest economy in recession. The White House pushback against recession talk is about more than semantics. Talking about recession can become a self-fulfilling prophecy as businesses and consumers, concerned that tougher times are ahead, cut back on spending and investment plans. The economy is top of mind for many voters ahead of the Nov. 8 midterm elections that will decide whether President Joe Biden's Democratic Party retains control of Congress. "We're not going to be in a recession," Biden himself told reporters on Monday. "My hope is we go from this rapid growth to a steady growth." Even so, a GDP contraction would likely exacerbate fears that the United States is headed for or in the midst of an economic pullback and worry voters already struggling with higher grocery and gas bills. White House officials believe the GDP weakness is due to one-off factors, including a decline in companies restocking inventories, that may not reflect broader trends. "We're seeing signs of slowing in the economy but slowing in a direction towards positive growth with lower inflation, consistent with the kind of transition that we'd like to see," said one senior administration official. Fighting 40-year-high inflation is central to Biden's strategy, which is broader than just one quarter of GDP, the official noted. The administration expects inflation, buoyed by energy and food shortages from the Russian invasion in Ukraine, to fall longer term as a result of its efforts to clear port backlogs, release oil from strategic reserves and rebuild critical infrastructure. Many private economists agree that the United States is not in recession - yet. But they see rising risks. They say climbing interest rates and softening housing data raise concerns. UPHILL BATTLE Since 1950, the United States has not experienced two consecutive quarters of GDP contraction that was not ultimately associated with a recession. But there has never been a recession declared without a loss of employment, and jobs are currently being added at a pace of hundreds of thousands monthly. The Republican Party has used high inflation and economic weaknesses to attack Biden's economic and spending priorities. The party has been scathing in its criticism of White House attempts to push back on recession talk. "In advance of the GDP numbers coming out later this week, the Biden administration has begun their latest project - a frantic effort to re-define the word 'recession,'" said U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell this week. "Their priority is telling everybody things aren’t as bad as they look or feel." Polling shows that the White House is fighting an uphill battle. A Morning Consult/Politico survey this month found that 65% of registered U.S. voters think the economy is already in a recession. Consumer sentiment has fallen among Democrats to the lowest level since Biden took office. Graphic: U.S. consumer sentiment by party affiliation U.S. consumer sentiment by party affiliation, https://graphics.reuters.com/USA-ECONOMY/SENTIMENT-POLITICS/znpneqjolvl/chart.png Biden's approval rating, meanwhile, has fallen back to a record low of 36%, according to Reuters/Ipsos polling. 4. Chicago Mayor Lightfoot refusing to pay speeding, red light tickets as they pile up: Report Andrew Miller Tue, July 26, 2022 at 3:24 PM Multiple police-driven vehicles used to transport Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot have reportedly racked up multiple traffic tickets that have gone unpaid despite the mayor's advocacy for stricter speed cameras in the city. Two of the SUVs used to shuttle Lightfoot throughout Chicago have accumulated three speed camera tickets and two warnings in the past month. The tickets have so far gone unpaid, CWB Chicago reported on Monday. Additionally, CWB Chicago reported that one of the SUVs in the mayor’s fleet has a red light ticket that has not been paid and two SUVs that were previously assigned to Lightfoot’s security detail have outstanding speed and red light tickets. One of those SUVs is eligible to be booted and impounded over the lack of payment. Mayor Lori Lightfoot, shown at City Hall on April 15, 2021. Jose M. Osorio/Chicago Tribune/Tribune News Service via Getty Images Two of the speed violations committed by Lightfoot’s SUVs reportedly occurred in school zones and the citations stated that school children were present. Since taking office, Lightfoot supported a push to lower the "buffer zone" threshold that speed cameras allow before issuing a citation from 10 mph to 6 mph, arguing that it will make roads safer. Chicago's Mayor Lori Lightfoot speaks during a science initiative event at the University of Chicago in Chicago, Illinois, U.S. July 23, 2020. REUTERS/Kamil Krzaczynski "No one likes speed cameras. I get it," Lightfoot was quoted last month. "But this is life or death that we’re talking about here, and we’ve got to step up as a city and address this." Lightfoot also pointed out the potential dangers to kids despite being ticketed for speeding through a school zone with her own security detail. "It is unconscionable that any City Council member would consider voting to allow for increased speeds near spaces utilized by our children," Lightfoot said. Lightfoot's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Fox News Digital. In 2020, Chicago Tribune reported that the city of Chicago dismissed the majority of tickets that were issued to Lightfoot's security team, which included tickets given at times the mayor was attending non-city related events. The Illinois Policy Institute, a libertarian think tank, found that Chicago has issued 3.8 million speeding tickets, generating almost $80 million in revenue to the city since Lightfoot lowered the threshold last year. The Chicago City Council struck down a measure to repeal the lowered speed camera threshold last week in a vote that Lightfoot supported. WLS-TV reported that 84% of all speed camera tickets issued were given to drivers driving between 6 and 10 miles per hour over the speed limit.

  8. I could tell you a story, but won't.
  9. You know his last name? The EAA Museum used to be very close to where I lived, I knew the folks there.

The Columbus Dispatch Ohio State Fair will allow guns in outdoor areas, but officials insist it will be safe Thomas Hanks, The Columbus Dispatch Tue, July 26, 2022 at 1:23 PM The Sky Glider floats over the WNCI Food Highway at the Ohio State Fair in Columbus in 2019. In the wake of recent mass shootings across the U.S., security will be increased this summer for the popular event, which opens next Wednesday and will last until Aug. 7 More Patrons will be able to bring concealed or open-carry weapons when the Ohio State Fair opens Wednesday and runs through Aug. 7, but only in outdoor areas and fair and law enforcement officials say visitors should still feel safe. "As visitors come to the Ohio State Fair this year, they're going to see a large number of troopers that are going to be everywhere on the state fairgrounds," said Sgt. Brice Nihiser, public affairs officer for the Ohio Highway Patrol. "If you see something that you think is suspicious or something you think that needs attention, there will likely be a state trooper near you — contact them." The ability to bring concealed or open-carry guns to the fairgrounds is nothing new under Ohio law, according to Alicia Shoults, assistant general manager of the Ohio Expo Center and State Fair. Changes to Ohio State Fair concealed, open-carry gun policy One change, however, is the result of Senate Bill 215, which went into effect June 13 and allows Ohio residents 21 and older to conceal firearms they are legally allowed to own without training or permits. "The current procedures at the Ohio State Fair are in compliance with Ohio state law," Shoults said in an email. "All patrons must continue to pass through magnetometers upon entry to the Ohio State Fair." There are limits to where weapons are permitted, however. They are allowed outside only on the fairgrounds. Patrons cannot carry firearms into buildings on the fairgrounds, Shoults said. In the past, as with this year, "if they would like to enter a building, they were permitted to return their firearm to their vehicle and return to the grounds with a handstamp then enter buildings," Shoults said. "All buildings have signs posted in accordance with the Ohio Revised Code which prohibits a firearm, deadly weapon or dangerous ordinance in the buildings." In the wake of recent mass shootings across the U.S., security will be increased for the popular event, Nihiser said. Asked what types of resources the Ohio Highway Patrol plans to devote toward safety at the state fair, Nihiser said he was unable to comment out of security concerns, but he did say that a large number of troopers would be present. "We're going to be highly visible and making sure that fairgoers are safe," he said.

  15. 33 Dead & Sick Friends Since Our Wedding Only 8 Months Ago. All 33 Vaxxed. A "Vaccine Death & Disease Cluster." By Wayne Allyn Root July 23, 2022 7 Min Read Yes, you read correctly. There are (so far) 33 friends and relatives dead or sick since our wedding eight months ago. I've done the research. All 33 were vaxxed. Every one of them. This is a "vaccine death and disease cluster." This is like the Love Canal, New York, cancer cluster of the 1970s. It can't be ignored when you see so many people dead, or very ill in just one group. But it has nothing to do with our wedding. Open your eyes. This is happening everywhere. Non-COVID-19 deaths are up dramatically in the United States (and all over the world). Life insurance companies report non-COVID-19 deaths are up 40% or more among young, working-age Americans. Lincoln National reports death benefit payouts are up over 163% in the year since COVID-19 vaccines came out. These are death increases not seen during World War II. Read the headlines: Every day a new celebrity, actor, rock star, athlete or CEO is dropping dead "suddenly and unexpectedly." Most of them are way too young to die or suffer strokes or heart attacks. I'm betting they all have one thing in common: they are VACCINATED. I surfed over to TMZ.com one night this week. Here were the headlines: —"American Pickers' Frank Fritz hospitalized after stroke." —"'Little Women: Atlanta' star Ms. Juicy suffered stroke, out of ICU." —"Hailey Bieber (Justin Bieber's 25-year-old wife) had mini-stroke, underwent heart procedure." —"'Elvis' actress Shonka Dukureh found dead in apartment at age 44." —"'Sopranos' Star Tony Sirico dead." —"'AGT' & 'Voice' contestant Nolan Neal dead at 41." Add to the list... —"Paul Duncan, 35, former Notre Dame football star died of heart attack while jogging." —"The autopsy of Sam Bruce, former Miami Hurricanes football player, was released." He died of a heart attack while driving in April at the age of 24. These were all headlines in one day this week! Have you ever heard of anything like this in your life? This is a tsunami. This is a plague. This is a REAL pandemic. These are all relatively young Americans either suddenly dead or very ill with the two most common side effects of the COVID-19 vaccine (heart attacks and strokes). Everything I have warned about on my national radio show since the first day of the vaccine has (sadly) happened. The chickens have come home to roost. I believe it's clear the COVID-19 vaccine is dangerous and deadly, that it is the biggest disaster and failure in the history of health care and that it is a nonstop death and injury machine. I've personally compiled a detailed list of studies released by governments and medical authorities around the world that all point to three absolute conclusions: A) The COVID-19 vaccine is a horrible failure. B) The COVID-19 vaccine is dangerous and deadly. C) Those who take two or more vaccines may be much more likely to get COVID-19... to be hospitalized with COVID-19... and to die from COVID-19. And in that time, people we know and love have been dying and suffering deadly non-COVID-19 illness in huge numbers. Thirty-three of them. Thirty-three dead, or injured, crippled or disabled in only eight months. That's a lot of friends and relatives. That's a "death cluster" that should be investigated by scientists, MDs and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That's a story that should garner media headlines. But wait, there's more... All 33 were vaccinated. It's important to note that I'm a conservative talk show host who has warned LOUDLY of the dangers of the vaccine since day one. So, my friends are overwhelmingly conservative and unvaccinated too. Yet the few friends I know who did choose to vaccinate are almost all dead or ill. Just think about those percentages. The ranks of my few vaccinated friends are decimated like a platoon of Marines shredded by an enemy ambush, who came home in body bags. Wait, here's the clincher. The great paradox: Drop in air pollution has INCREASED global warming because clean air does not contain aerosol particles that reflect sunlight and cool the Earth Current pollution rates are 30 percent lower than in 2000 However, this has led to an increase in warming from carbon emissions Scientists found there is less haze in the atmosphere to block the sun's radition They suggest using solar engineering to launch aerosol particles into the atmosphere in a bid to combat climate change By STACY LIBERATORE FOR DAILYMAIL.COM PUBLISHED: 16:56 EDT, 22 July 2022 | UPDATED: 08:46 EDT, 23 July 2022 376 View comments Scientists have found a great paradox in nature – clean air is enhancing global warming, while pollution keeps our planet cool. A team of international researchers determined current pollution rates are 30 percent lower than in 2000, but warming from carbon dioxide emissions have increased by up to 50 percent. Pollution particles, like sulfate or nitrate, are known for reflective properties and are typically found in exhaust. The team, in a desperate move, suggests turning to aerosols once more, but by using a controversial type of geoengineering to do so. This method, called solar engineering, entails launching sulfate particles into the stratosphere that would in turn create a reflective haze around the globe, Science.org reports. The study, led by Leipzig University, brings good news for human health – these particles are linked to millions of deaths each year – but is grim for what the future holds for humanity. Scroll down for video While pollution has dropped by 20% since 2000, warming from carbon emissions have increased The team found that ocean heat has experienced a rise since 2000, which again they said is due to the world adopting policies that reduce the use of aerosols. Johannes Quaas, a climate scientist at Leipzig University and lead author of the study, told Science.org that the study was conducted using instruments on NASA's Terra and Aqua satellites, both of which collect data on Earth's atmosphere. These device also gather intelligence on the radiation coming in and coming out of Earth, allowing the study to understand the increase in infrared heat trapped by greenhouse gases. And another instrument on the satellites showed a decline in reflective light coming from Earth. +4 View gallery Scientists used NASA's Terra and Aqua (pictured) satellites to study the atmosphere and found there is less haze because the air is cleaner. Less haze means more radiation is entering All of this data allowed the team to analyze haze in the atmosphere, which led them to determine the haze over North America, Europe and East Asia cleared dramatically from 2000 to 2019. Venkatachalam Ramaswamy, director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory, told Science.org that there could be only one explanation for this - the air is cleaner. 'It's very hard to find alternate reasons for this,' he said. The results sparked the idea of putting pollution particles back into the atmosphere, which in turn would reflect solar radiation back to space and ultimately limit or reverse human-causing climate change. +4 View gallery The team, in a desperate move, suggests turning to aerosols once more, but by using the controversial geoengineering to do so. This method has been proposed by the Stratospheric Controlled Perturbation Experiment, which is funded by Microsoft founder Bill Gates This method has been proposed by the Stratospheric Controlled Perturbation Experiment, which is funded by Microsoft founder Bill Gates. This initial $3 million test would use a high-altitude scientific balloon to raise around four pounds of calcium carbonate dust — the size of a bag of flour — into the atmosphere 12 miles above the desert of New Mexico. This would seed a tube-shaped area of sky half a mile long and 100 yards in diameter. For the ensuing 24 hours, the balloon would be steered by propellers back through this artificial cloud, its onboard sensors monitoring both the dust's sun-reflecting abilities and its effects on the thin surrounding air. SCoPEx is, however, on hold, amid fears that it could trigger a disastrous series of chain reactions, creating climate havoc in the form of serious droughts and hurricanes, and bring death to millions of people around the world.
  18. UN health agency declares monkeypox a global emergency MARIA CHENG July 23, 2022, 10:27 AM 1 / 2 WHO Monkeypox FILE - This 1997 image provided by the CDC during an investigation into an outbreak of monkeypox, which took place in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), formerly Zaire, and depicts the dorsal surfaces of the hands of a monkeypox case patient, who was displaying the appearance of the characteristic rash during its recuperative stage. The World Health Organization is convening its emergency committee on Thursday, July 21, 2022 to consider for the second time within weeks whether the expanding outbreak of monkeypox should be declared a global crisis. (CDC via AP, File) ASSOCIATED PRESS LONDON (AP) — The World Health Organization said the expanding monkeypox outbreak in more than 70 countries is an “extraordinary” situation that now qualifies as a global emergency, a declaration Saturday that could spur further investment in treating the once-rare disease and worsen the scramble for scarce vaccines. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus made the decision to issue the declaration despite a lack of consensus among members of WHO's emergency committee. It was the first time the chief of the U.N. health agency has taken such an action. “In short, we have an outbreak that has spread around the world rapidly through new modes of transmission about which we understand too little and which meets the criteria in the international health regulations,” Tedros said. “I know this has not been an easy or straightforward process and that there are divergent views among the members" of the committee, he added. Although monkeypox has been established in parts of central and west Africa for decades, it was not known to spark large outbreaks beyond the continent or to spread widely among people until May, when authorities detected dozens of epidemics in Europe, North America and elsewhere. Declaring a global emergency means the monkeypox outbreak is an “extraordinary event” that could spill over into more countries and requires a coordinated global response. WHO previously declared emergencies for public health crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2014 West African Ebola outbreak, the Zika virus in Latin America in 2016 and the ongoing effort to eradicate polio. The emergency declaration mostly serves as a plea to draw more global resources and attention to an outbreak. Past announcements had mixed impact, given that the U.N. health agency is largely powerless in getting countries to act. Last month, WHO’s expert committee said the worldwide monkeypox outbreak did not yet amount to an international emergency, but the panel convened this week to reevaluate the situation. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 16,000 cases of monkeypox have been reported in 74 countries since about May. To date, monkeypox deaths have only been reported in Africa, where a more dangerous version of the virus is spreading, mainly in Nigeria and Congo. In Africa, monkeypox mainly spreads to people from infected wild animals like rodents, in limited outbreaks that typically have not crossed borders. In Europe, North America and elsewhere, however, monkeypox is spreading among people with no links to animals or recent travel to Africa. WHO’s top monkeypox expert, Dr. Rosamund Lewis, said this week that 99% of all the monkeypox cases beyond Africa were in men and that of those, 98% involved men who have sex with men. Experts suspect the monkeypox outbreaks in Europe and North America were spread via sex at two raves in Belgium and Spain. Michael Head, a senior research fellow in global health at Southampton University, said it was surprising WHO hadn’t already declared monkeypox a global emergency, explaining that the conditions were arguably met weeks ago. Some experts have questioned whether such a declaration would help, arguing the disease isn’t severe enough to warrant the attention and that rich countries battling monkeypox already have the funds to do so; most people recover without needing medical attention, although the lesions may be painful. “I think it would be better to be proactive and overreact to the problem instead of waiting to react when it’s too late," Head said. He added that WHO’s emergency declaration could help donors like the World Bank make funds available to stop the outbreaks both in the West and in Africa, where animals are the likely natural reservoir of monkeypox. In the U.S., some experts have speculated whether monkeypox might be on the verge of becoming an entrenched sexually transmitted disease in the country, like gonorrhea, herpes and HIV. “The bottom line is we’ve seen a shift in the epidemiology of monkeypox where there’s now widespread, unexpected transmission,” said Dr. Albert Ko, a professor of public health and epidemiology at Yale University. “There are some genetic mutations in the virus that suggest why that may be happening, but we do need a globally-coordinated response to get it under control,” he said. Ko called for testing to be immediately scaled up rapidly, saying that similar to the early days of COVID-19, that there were significant gaps in surveillance. “The cases we are seeing are just the tip of the iceberg,” he said. “The window has probably closed for us to quickly stop the outbreaks in Europe and the U.S., but it’s not too late to stop monkeypox from causing huge damage to poorer countries without the resources to handle it.” In the U.S., some experts have speculated that monkeypox might become entrenched there as the newest sexually transmitted disease, with officials estimating that 1.5 million men are at high risk of being infected. Dr. Placide Mbala, a virologist who directs the global health department at Congo’s Institute of National Biomedical Research, said he hoped any global efforts to stop monkeypox would be equitable. Although countries including Britain, Canada, Germany and the U.S. have ordered millions of vaccine doses, none have gone to Africa. “The solution needs to be global,” Mbala said, adding that any vaccines sent to Africa would be used to target those at highest risk, like hunters in rural areas. “Vaccination in the West might help stop the outbreak there, but there will still be cases in Africa,” he said. “Unless the problem is solved here, the risk to the rest of the world will remain.”
  19. CIA director: Putin 'too healthy' Vladimir Putin is “entirely too healthy,” CIA Director William Burns said Wednesday, throwing cold water on constant rumors that the Russian president is suffering from illness as he pursues his war on Ukraine. Burns, speaking at the Aspen Security Forum, noted that his declaration was “not a formal intelligence judgment.” Still, given his position, Burns’ comment could help dampen hopes among Putin’s adversaries that the Russian’s demise is near. Burns spoke a day after Putin visited Iran, where he met with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. It was a rare foray outside Russia for Putin; he has been largely isolated during the coronavirus pandemic, even as he launched a war. But Iran and Russia appear to be stepping up their cooperation as both face much global ostracizing. U.S. officials say Iran is planning to transfer hundreds of drones to Russia to help it with its war effort. Burns, a former career diplomat who did two tours in Moscow, spent much of his appearance in Aspen responding to questions about Russia and the war in Ukraine. “As far as we can tell, he’s entirely too healthy,” he said when asked by NBC’s Andrea Mitchell about Putin’s health. He indicated that the Iranians should rethink any decision to give drones to Putin. At the same time, Burns said that the fact that Putin is turning to Iran for such weaponry is a sign of the weakness of Russia’s own defense sector.
