  1. #61 Yeah. The studs are a good idea. They used to race them on Lake George like that. I haven't seen anything about it lately. When I was in high school I tried bicycling w/out studs on the frozen Hudson river. It slipped out from under often; painful. But it probably helped w/ my balance. I'm on Social Security, but still do 60 miles a week on my bicycle. I'm good on 2 wheels. If you don't want to run your rig on "hard" water, here's a rig for soft water. Just don't run out of gas while you're in the channel!
  2. I'm nearly on it w/ you #578. I avoid toxics. But whatever wood is lying around is fine. The trick depicted in this graphic is called "beer-can chicken". I don't use a beer can, just a wire rack to hold the bird up. The heat rises into the inverted cauldron, and cooks the bird, ~22 minutes per pound if you keep the flame within 3" - 4" of the grill. It's DELICIOUS !
  3. Oh. I don't own a snowmobile (I call them half-tracks). I prefer a nicely broken in Flexible Flyer. I've ridden snowmobiles before. BUT ! here's the ride I straddle: It's a dream bike! It'll go in the desert. It'll go in the forest. It'll go on the highway. And getting over 60 MPG w/ it has brought only tears of joy to my eye.
  4. "He was already a member " Mom #15 The credential below my avatar says I joined Thursday. I've got work to do. But it's a little gloomy outside. So I'm relaxing inside where it's warm & dry. I've got a football game going on the other screen.
  5. Thanks CFK. Not by submarine. I used to be at another domain of sites. For unknown reason a few days ago my browser said I'm forbidden there (I've been there since the previous millennium). I switched browsers, but get the same error code. I've done a malware scan. No luck. No clue. Next time I'm at the public library I'll use their computer to submit a ticket on it. Meanwhile I used IXquick search-engine to find Current Events BBS. I found this, and a few others. It's an interesting change of pace; so far, fun. It's the first time I can recall having a thread dedicated to me. Problem is, w/ all that's going on in the world, sear is about the most boring topic imaginable, so I expect this thread to be short. Perhaps we can discuss: - global warming - Trump's proposed vetting of immigrants - gun control - Russian aggression, & threat to NATO & Western interests - economics - etc. Lots going on in the world. Isn't this an excellent forum to explore it? Thanks again all.
  6. Wow! A thread dedicated to me? How cool is that! Thanks Mom! And my thanks also to the other posting members of this forum. I'm flattered. Q: This is the one site where I have no avatar. I checked my profile, but can't even find the word "avatar". Can you provide me some help on how I can get my avatar showing here? And perhaps a sig-line too? Thanks again gang.
  7. SR #20 Thanks. Seems like a bargain to me. Do you know what the energy efficiency differential is between LED & HID? Lumens per watt? PS #25 I'm fortunate to have graduated grammar school.
  8. LED stands for "Light Emitting Diode". What does HID stand for? Most of the lights in my home are LED, either 12 VDC or 120 VAC. With my "energy star" refrigerator, I often manage to keep my commercial power bill below $30.oo / month. I'm curious what it costs to light a stadium for the night (a game). A football game takes 3 hours (NFL games get stretched out for commercial breaks), but the spectator gates open an hour or two early so fans can $splash $money at the concession stands before they're seated. And I doubt they shut the lights off until an hour or two after the game ends. I simply don't know the quantification, in lumens, candle-power, wattage, or the universal standard: $dollars.
  9. #16 PS Can you give us some idea of either the power draw to illuminate a football field that well; and or (depending on the local kW / hr standard) what it costs to illuminate such a stadium for a night game?
  10. #14 Very impressive. - Do you know the "mean time before fail" rating on the baseball field LED? - What's HID? (I've got some motorcyclist buds that prefer HID, but I never found out what it is) Did you know that the hue of light an LED emits influences its power consumption? Some hues are much less energy consuming than some others. For more on that, check out superbrightLED.com I bought strings of white light LEDs from them, and expect a delivery from them early next week.
  11. AC #11 It's gotten more complicated. Simple incandescent bulbs didn't vary much, Tungsten, Halogen, & wattage. LED can vary in efficiency, and hue. The hue is quantified in degrees Kelvin. http://images.yuku.com/image/jpeg/1eb15b4263109d7ff87f060e1b814707388658a.jpg[/img] http://images.yuku.com/image/jpeg/1eb15b4263109d7ff87f060e1b814707388658a.jpg The most important lights in my home are 12 VDC and run directly off my uninterruptible power supply (UPS). I live in the forest. When the commercial power fails as it occasionally does, the lights I need stay on. They don't even flicker. My days of stumbling around in the dark looking for a flashlight during a commercial power failure are gone forever.
  12. #8 Interesting point. 8 years is a long time in a human lifespan. WE ALL age in 8 years. Some say Obama's hair went just as grey w/ him as president as it would if he'd been selling used cars in a Chicago suburb. Perhaps. But I've lived through those same years. I don't think I aged that fast. We can ask Ayn Rand. But I imagine, with the weight of the world on your shoulders, the human body ages more quickly.
  13. #5 He's one year older than Hillary. He does seem more frail. I detect it in his voice.
  14. The pilot of Air Force One is active U.S. military. On the day of the event President Obama was commander in chief. If Obama wanted to leave, ONE warning to "Bill" is enough. Obama could simply have sauntered up to the cockpit, and ordered the pilot to get the wheels up. At that point the pilot is obliged, compelled by oath & duty, to obey. And "Bill" could get a cab.
  15. Thanks for the topic r2. A couple of issues: - Some voting schemes don't have an audit trail; electronic voting can be an example of that. - Some political voting systems in the U.S. are hackable. - One of the concerns about particularly Russian hackers is that they might undermine confidence in this November's presidential election; particularly because Putin favors Trump. And there are locations like Ohio, where corruption is more evident; for example denying eligible voters the opportunity to vote, etc.
  16. Welcome home SR. I heard a NASA astronaut talking about seeing stars. He said the view from an excellent viewing location on Earth is about as good from space. I was surprised. I thought, without an atmosphere, the view from a shuttle or the ISS would just be awash of white dots. He said no.
  17. dz #279 Excellent. Here's my rig: I like cooking over a wood fire.
  18. Oh? In what way? By fortunate coincidence, LED technology continues to improve. So we can kill 3 birds with one stone: - upgrade to more energy efficient LED - reduce waste (lighting the sky is foolish, direct the light downward, and save energy & $$$) - LED is low maintenance. Many have a MTBF spec. of 40,000 hrs. or more. That means fewer dangerous trips up the ladder to "change bulbs". And btw: doing these light-pollution reducing upgrades helps the workers paid to do the work. So rather than "hurt" them (your assertion), it helps them.
  19. Thanks r2. I can see the Milky Way from my house, and have seen Aurora Borealis from here too. I needed binoculars to see the moons of Jupiter. There's expense involved, but there is a light pollution reduction movement underway. It's making progress. "Keep looking up!"
  20. I'm tired of drinking milk, so I'll drink pure Chlorox bleach from now on.
  21. "I understand why. I just overestimated the intelligence of the American people." #277 Plausible. It's easy to forget that half the people we know are below average. Many clever people; including s a v v y political observers including professionals, thought Trump's early primary wins were flukes. Sadly, "Make America Great Again", the dystopian mantra that things are horrible, and that President Trump will fix it; is actually plausible to some of these buffoons, these rubes. That doesn't credit Hillary. She may be worse. Please don't infer more than I imply. I simply observe, Trump is not presidential material.
  22. Unfortunately, many 2016 cars are horribly over-engineered. They have ridiculous doodads, including vulnerability to hackers. I bought this one last month: http://images.yuku.com/image/jpeg/279257748f6a711694873dd617a8bad39602b5f.JPG[/img] It's the most stripped down Honda Civic they offer. It's the only model without keyless ignition. I figured I'd better buy, before the only new cars available were nightmares.
  23. It is unwise for you to guess at my position. But if you must, please do not guess so flagrantly wrongly. I don't busy my mind with such trivia. I don't care much for any candidate in the race. In the primary I supported Ohio Governor Kasich, because I thought he was the one best suited to beat Hillary in November. I usually vote. But this November? Not sure. Why should I buy gasoline to drive to the poll to vote for a candidate I don't support?
