Given its capabilities and the fact it’s actually 3 combat aircraft in one, the $1 trillion plus price tag has turned into a bargain. akvanden
Isn’t the F22 more advanced? Wonder if we give all this tech away to our allies when we sell them these planes.

The US controls the equipment the F35 is shipped with. The only country that gets a build to order F35 is Israel. Go figure.

Yes and no. The F22 has no equal on the world stage as far as air superiority but the F35 has more advanced electronics. The real power of the F35 is automation to reduce pilot work load and the ability to quarterback drones and other weapon systems.

The variants are so different from each that only 20-30% of the parts are actually interchangeable.

XCR1250
High operating costs, obsolescence, and immense production prices contributed to the type's planned retirement starting in 2030. Despite $11 billion in updates, the F-22's avionics remain outdated, and its lack of modularity limits the ability to improve its systems. It has great abilities but against a dedicated air superiority fighter with better stealth and thrust vectoring it would be no contest. I have seen both planes fly and it is no contest as to which plane would be winner in a fight.

Also some of the early build F22s are being used as 6th generation test beds. Some that could trickle down to front line F22s.

The real short coming of the F22 is that it does not have a job. What air force on earth would last a week against 50 F22s let alone the 180 we have laying around. And that is forgetting the part where we still have the most successful fighter in history the F15 in the bull pen.

It is a situation awareness monster. Nothing flying has the capability to give the pilot a gods eye view like the F35. But it is not a dog fighter or air superiority plane.
