Tesla still sources some of them from Panasonic.

Without it the 4680 doesn’t exist without using Tesla’s patent Tesla developed the current and working 4680 and hold several patents on it. Panosonic just builds it under Teslas patents. https://electrek.co/2020/05/07/tesla-patents-battery-cell-elon-musk-hypes-way-more-important-than-it-sounds/

Gold Member BOHICA Posted January 25, 2023 Author Gold Member Share Posted January 25, 2023 Tesla is the only one making 4680 cells…. Panasonic is struggling developing the assembly lines annd getting anny meaningful production and trying to find a way around tesla patents. Many years out from anybody besides tesla making 4680’s if anybody else makes them at all. Giga Nevada is being built to build 100 gwh of 4680 cells with the future ability to produce 500 gwh’s worth of cells. Tesla can now equip around 1,000 vehicles per week with its new 4680 battery cells. At the end of December, Tesla said it achieved a production rate of 868,000 4680cells in one week – enough for said approximately 1,000 electric cars. Tesla’s battery partner Panasonic manufactures 4680 cells on a pilot line in Japan, but series production is to take place in North America – presumably at a new plant in Kansas, which is not due to be completed until March 2025. https://www.electrive.com/2023/01/02/tesla-increases-4680-cell-production-capacities/

Gold Member BOHICA Posted January 28, 2023 Author Gold Member Share Posted January 28, 2023 yep. Appears GM will be using Tesla battery cells just like BMW is as well. https://cleantechnica.com/2023/01/28/gm-switching-to-cylindrical-battery-cells/ A report by South Korea’s TheElec claims that General Motors is planning to stop using pouch cells in its future electric cars and switch to cylindrical cells. The move has caused some stress in the relationship between GM and its primary battery supplier, LG Energy Solution. The two companies are have already agreed to jointly construct and operate three battery factories in the US. One is already in operation in Ohio and two others are under construction — one in Michigan and the other in Tennessee.
