I'm a big fan of bolt actions and moderately priced guns so I would go with a Remington 700 chambered 30-06 or .300 Win Mag, and then being practical I would go with a synthetic stock.

Same here.  Great gun.  She's delivered on around 20 mule deer and 15 elk in the last 23 years.  The elk have all been one shot and down so the .270 is definitely not lacking knock down power.  Well, till this season...still not sure how I didn't get a huge bull elk , broadside shoulder shot at about 80 yards...:cry:>:(, had to be shooter error.  At least there is a nice 3x4 muley in the freezer :good:
