Meanwhile, FEMA funds are currently being received by the states of Iowa, Louisiana, New York, California and Washington due to requests by their governors, and the swift approval of the Trump administration. It’s time for Governor Whitmer to put aside her partisanship and do what's right for the people of Michigan. The entirety of the Free Press article can be found below. FEMA: Michigan has not requested major disaster declaration for coronavirus Paul Egan, Detroit Free Press LANSING — Michigan has not yet requested a major disaster declaration for the coronavirus, a spokesman for the Federal Emergency Management Agency said Wednesday. The administration of President Donald Trump has already declared major disasters for Iowa, Louisiana, New York, California and Washington, officials confirmed. But for Michigan, where the number of confirmed cases topped 1,700 Tuesday, with at least 24 deaths, "FEMA has not yet received a request for a major disaster declaration," spokesman Michael Hart said. Michigan ranks fifth in the nation for total numbers of coronavirus cases, behind New York, New Jersey, Washington and California. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has repeatedly called on Trump to declare a national disaster in connection with the pandemic and did obtain a limited disaster designation for the purposes of accessing federal small business loans. She has also criticized the federal government for acting slowly to prepare for the coronavirus, not declaring a federal disaster, and not providing a national strategy to deal with the pandemic. A major disaster declaration brings increased federal funding and other forms of assistance. "This is something that we are reviewing and looking into," said Tiffany Brown, a spokeswoman for Michigan Gov. Dripper makes a few good points. Other governors have already done some of those things. The Gov and mayors of AK shut down all bars and restaurants 2 weeks ago. Worked with industry to eliminate or drastically reduce the number of employees flying up to the oil field. Made CV tests available for the oil companies so they could test every passenger before they got on the airplane to work. Closed schools not to reopen next year. Cancelled all public gatherings of more than 50 people, then reduced it to 10 people. Secured PPE for first responders and hospital staff. Secured vents for our 3 biggest hospitals. If that's what he meant he should have said that...he said running around coming in airplanes from who knows where....his words. He also makes it sound simple to stop everybody, check their paperwork to determine if they are essential and then just turn them around if they aren't. It's a little more involved than that. Maybe she should call out the guard and block all roads in and out of the hotspots as it was just reported there are 800 new cases in Michigan today.
