Good and why does a "village" of 300 people need a police chief anyhow?

The last election a town in western nh voted to close their police dept. Many in VT don't have em.

Back home, the police chief was a county deputy who was paid a separate, modest salary(like $10k) to also patrol the village.

About the same size town.

No towns in Iowa that small have police depts.   They pay the sherriff depts a bit for more patrols.  Cant think of any under 1000-1250 that have one.

That's all they do. WEll they are also babysitters of county prisnors. What they don't usually do is patrol, traffic stops , criminal investigations.

IN NH all violent crime is investigated by state police with the exception of the 5 biggest cities who have their own

State police patrol interstate hwys and some state hwys. Town police patrol town streets and answer town calls. Many of the smaller towns only have 1 part time cop working per day with no one on on weekends except and on call guy.

In mass minor and major crimes with the exception of homicides are handled by local cops. Homicides are investigated by a state trooper assigned to the county attys office.

State police patrol interstate hwys. Local police can drive on a hwy just like you or I but they have no jurisdiction on a interstate.

There are counties in NH where I have never even seen a sherrifs office cruiser. IN mass we just blow by them on the hwy at 15 mph over the limit. There is nothing they can do except call the state police who will tell them " we don't care"

From your link:

An investigation into the department uncovered dozens of people were kept on as reserve officers, from business people and to celebrities including singer Kid Rock. Oakley is a village of about 300 in Saginaw County.

Does this mean Kid Rock will have to give up his badge?

Because you get a Chief who can help consumers by avoiding sales tax

Robert J. Reznick entered the guilty plea on March 26 before U.S. Magistrate Judge Patricia Morris in Bay City.

He used his position to obtain reduced prices on firearms, ammunition, and other equipment from suppliers in and out of state and sold it to reserve officers for profit, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Eastern District of Michigan.

An investigation into the department uncovered dozens of people were kept on as reserve officers, from business people and to celebrities including singer Kid Rock. Oakley is a village of about 300 in Saginaw County.

“Reznick also used his position as police chief to facilitate the sale of assault shotguns, with the capacity to hold 16 rounds, from an out-of-state vendor for some of his customers and thereby enabled the purchasers of those shotguns to evade the federal and state taxes on the transactions,” reads the statement.

Manny Muriel, Special Agent in Charge of the Detroit’s IRS Criminal Investigation, said, “Mr. Reznick dishonored his position as police chief and victimized the American taxpayers in the process.
