  12. EATING IN THE FIFTIES Pasta had not been invented. It was macaroni or spaghetti. Curry was a surname. A take-away was a mathematical problem. Pizza? Sounds like a leaning tower somewhere. All chips were plain. Oil was for lubricating, fat was for cooking. Tea was made in a teapot using tea leaves and never green. Cubed sugar was regarded as posh. Chickens didn't have fingers in those days. None of us had ever heard of yogurt. Healthy food consisted of anything edible. Cooking outside was called camping. Seaweed was not a recognized food. 'Kebab' was not even a word, never mind a food. Sugar enjoyed a good press in those days, and was regarded as being white gold. Prunes were medicinal. Surprisingly muesli was readily available. It was called cattle feed. Pineapples came in chunks in a tin; we had only ever seen a picture of a real one. Water came out of the tap. If someone had suggested bottling it and charging more than gasoline for it, they would have become a laughing stock.
  13. By Sudhin Thanawala, Associated Press SAN FRANCISCO — A federal government ban on the sale of guns to medical marijuana card holders does not violate the Second Amendment, a federal appeals court said Wednesday. The ruling by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals applies to the nine Western states that fall under the court’s jurisdiction, including California, Washington and Oregon. It came in a lawsuit filed by S. Rowan Wilson, a Nevada woman who said she tried to buy a firearm for self-defense in 2011 after obtaining a medical marijuana card. The gun store refused, citing the federal rule banning the sale of firearms to illegal drug users. Marijuana remains illegal under federal law, and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has told gun sellers they can assume a person with a medical marijuana card uses the drug. The 9th Circuit in its 3-0 decision said Congress reasonably concluded that marijuana and other drug use “raises the risk of irrational or unpredictable behavior with which gun use should not be associated.” The court also concluded that it’s reasonable for federal regulators to assume a medical marijuana card holder was more likely to use the drug. Wilson’s attorney, Chaz Rainey, said there needs to be more consistency in the application of the Second Amendment. He planned to appeal. “We live in a world where having a medical marijuana card is enough to say you don’t get a gun, but if you’re on the no fly list your constitutional right is still protected,” he said. The 9th Circuit also rejected other constitutional challenges to the ban that were raised by Wilson, including her argument that her gun rights were being stripped without due process. Paul Armentano, deputy director of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, said the idea that marijuana users were more prone to violence is a fallacy. “Responsible adults who use cannabis in a manner that is compliant with the laws of their states ought to receive the same legal rights and protections as other citizens,” he said.

  16. Definition of "OLD" #1 I very quietly confided to my best friend that I was having an affair. She turned to me and asked, "Are you having it catered?" And that, my friend, is the sad definition of "OLD" #2 Just before the funeral services, the undertaker came up to the very elderly widow and asked, "How old was your husband?" "98," she replied: "Two years older than me" "So you're 96," the undertaker commented. She responded, "Hardly worth going home, is it?" #3 Reporters interviewing a 104-year-old woman: "And what do you think is the best thing about being 104?" the reporter asked. She simply replied, "No peer pressure." #4 I've sure gotten old! I have outlived my feet and my teeth I've had two bypass surgeries, a hip replacement, new knees, fought prostate cancer and diabetes I'm half blind, can't hear anything quieter than a jet engine, take 40 different medications that make me dizzy, winded, and subject to blackouts. Have bouts with dementia. Have poor circulation; hardly feel my hands and feet anymore. Can't remember if I'm 85 or 92. Have lost all my friends. But, thank God, I still have my driver's license. #5 I feel like my body has gotten totally out of shape, so I got my doctor's permission to join a fitness club and start exercising. I decided to take an aerobics class for seniors. I bent, twisted, gyrated, jumped up and down, and perspired for an hour. But, by the time I got my leotards on, the class was over. #6 An elderly woman decided to prepare her will and told her preacher she had two final requests. First, she wanted to be cremated, and second, she wanted her ashes scattered over Wal-Mart. "Wal-Mart?" the preacher exclaimed. "Why Wal-Mart?" "Then I'll be sure my daughters visit me twice a week" #7 My memory's not as sharp as it used to be. Also, my memory's not as sharp as it used to be. #8 Know how to prevent sagging? Just eat till the wrinkles fill out. #9 It's scary when you start making the same noises as your coffee maker. #10 These days about half the stuff in my shopping cart says, 'For fast relief.' #11 THE SENILITY PRAYER : Grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway, the good fortune to run into the ones I do, and the eyesight to tell the difference.

  18. This week Illinois' insurance regulator said ObamaCare premiums in the state will jump as high as 55%. The Obama administration's response to this and other news of massive rate hikes: Don't worry. Be happy. Anyone shopping for ObamaCare coverage in Illinois this fall is in for a big shock. The average increase for cheap Bronze plans is likely 44%. It's 45% for the lowest-cost Silver plan, and 55% for the cheapest Gold plan. These are the kinds of rate hikes individuals buying insurance will see across the country, as insurers who've suffered massive losses are getting huge double-digit premium increases approved by state regulators. Fewer choices and higher costs are not what President Obama promised when he signed ObamaCare into law. But now, in the face of this market meltdown, the Obama administration put out a report this week that says, if anything, massive rate hikes are good for ObamaCare enrollees. Most enrollees, they say, won't even notice the rate hikes, because the ObamaCare subsidies will cover most of the additional premium costs. In fact, the report says, the subsidies are designed in such a way that the bigger the premium increase the better. According to the report, this year 76% of enrollees could buy an ObamaCare plan for $100 a month or less. If premiums were to go up 10% next year, the report says, 77% would be able to buy coverage for $100 or less. But if they shot up 50%, then even more — 80% -- could buy a plan for $100 or less a month. The reason for this upside-down result is that the subsidy is based on the cost of the second-cheapest Silver plan in any given area. The higher the cost for that, the bigger the potential subsidy. But this analysis leaves out two important groups: the taxpayers who must pay vastly increased subsidy costs, and the millions of people who aren't eligible for any ObamaCare subsidies. Since subsidy money doesn't grow on trees, those huge rate increases will mean that ObamaCare costs far more than expected, which means taxpayers will have to fork over still more money to cover the subsidies. More troubling, however, is the fact that the administration is completely ignoring the plight of those who buy plans on the individual market and aren't eligible for ObamaCare subsidies. Of the 11.1 million who paid for coverage in an ObamaCare exchange this year, 1.7 million got zero help from ObamaCare, and an additional 700,000 or so get only minimal subsidies, which phase out as income rises. What's more, there are nearly 8 million who bought individual plans outside the ObamaCare exchanges. These plans have to comply with all the same ObamaCare rules and regulations, but aren't eligible for any subsidies. Add it all up and roughly half the individual market gets little or no help in the face of these massive, ObamaCare-induced premium hikes. Plus there are the tens of millions who are still uninsured, many of whom can't afford ObamaCare one way or another. The Obama administration is shamefully ignoring the plight of millions of middle-class families.

The United States 4.2 !!!!! ALL (109) of the countries above America, HAVE 100% gun bans! It might be of interest to note that SWITZERLAND is not shown on this list, because it has...NO MURDER OCCURRENCE! I find this interesting, and asked my friend in Lausanne to tell me if it’s true. However, SWITZERLAND 'S law requires that EVERYONE: 1. Own a gun. 2. Maintain Marksman qualifications ... regularly. (Switzerland provides every citizen with 250 rounds of ammo yearly. 100 of that is used in yearly government MANDATORY Marksman qualifying, for EVERYONE over the age of 10.)
