Guys that are buying used shocks look at the shafts first

Recommended Posts

I rebuild a number of shocks each year.  One problem that comes up each year is guys buying used shocks.  Have a guy right now that bought 4 shocks off e-bay, for $200.00 "just needs rebuilding".  The problem is 3 out of the 4 shocks need new shafts and in this case will be $150.00.  Shafts can range from about $40.00 on older shocks to $125.00 for a KYB with rebound adjust.

Look at the shafts real close for any pitting.  If there is any pitting the shaft will need to be replaced or it takes the seal out. If the shock body if full of oil chances are the shaft is pitted and has taken the seal out.

Just bringing this to the top.  Got 4 more shocks in yesterday from a sled that only has 1700 miles and 3 of the shocks have pitted shafts that will need to be replaced.  If you see that your shocks have oil almost syrup like residue on the top cap and shock body chances are the shaft is pitted and the seals out now bad.  Shafts are getting harder to get and prices are going up on them.  Check your sled out early or you may be waiting for parts when snow hits
