In 1933 FDR under the guise of a never expired war statute and anti hording sentiment of the great depression ordered almost all gold turned in or "sold" to the US govt.   Owners were reimbursed at a rate of about $20 an ounce.   Not long after FDR or the FED artificially set the new gold price of $35 ounce making it wildly profitable for the US Govt.   It was all melted down into bars and Fort Knox was turned into a garrison to hold it.
