Peaceful protests are meant to create awareness. Riots can be a source of both creating awareness and instilling fear. It took the riots following MLK's assassination to pass the stalled civil rights act. There was the Boston Tea Party. The stamp act riots. The Stonewall riots lead to gay rights. Cops getting beat and chased by drunk fags has a strong effect.

Riots have become much more tame and way shorter lived compared to those in the past. I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing.
