  2. Alberta man changes gender on government IDs for cheaper car insurance He says he saved almost $1,100 Reid Southwick · CBC News · Posted: Jul 20, 2018 1:24 PM MT | Last Updated: July 26 Redacted birth certificates of an Alberta man who changed his gender for cheaper car insurance. The circles in red show that the certificate on the left reads 'male' while the newer one on the right reads 'female.'(Submitted) comments He wanted a brand new car — a Chevrolet Cruze with all the trimmings. As a man in his early 20s, he knew his insurance costs would be high. So he became a woman, though only on paper. "I have taken advantage of a loophole," said the man — we're calling him David — who spoke on the condition that his identity be kept confidential because of the potential repercussions. 'Getting screwed' David, who lives in Alberta, says he identifies as a male. But his government-issued identification tells a different story. It started when an insurance company gave David a quote — roughly $4,500 a year, if he bought the Chevy. He had a collision and a ticket or two on his record, which helped boost the premium. Then, he had an idea. He asked the insurer what his costs would be if he were a woman. He was told his annual bill would sink to roughly $3,400 — a $1,100 difference. "I was pretty angry about that. And I didn't feel like getting screwed over any more," he said. "So I asked them to change my gender on my auto policy, and she's like, we can't do that." Young men generally pay more According to the Insurance Bureau of Canada, men under 25 are generally at higher risk of collision than women of the same age, which means their premiums are often higher. David, who was 23 at the time, says he learned he first had to change his gender on his birth certificate and driver's licence before he could have it reflected on his insurance policy, to get the cheaper rate. After doing some research, he realized he needed a doctor's note to show the government he identifies as a woman, even though he doesn't. "It was pretty simple," he said. "I just basically asked for it and told them that I identify as a woman, or I'd like to identify as a woman, and he wrote me the letter I wanted." Under the rules in place at the time, Albertans needed to produce a doctor's note to switch the gender marker on their personal documents. In June, the government scrapped the doctor's note requirement for adults, allowing them to declare their marker as M, F or X, for those who don't fit into a strictly male or female binary. 'I felt like I won' David shipped the note and other paperwork off to the provincial government. And, a few weeks later, he received a new birth certificate in the mail indicating he was a woman. "I was quite shocked, but I was also relieved," he said. "I felt like I beat the system. I felt like I won." With the new birth certificate in hand, he changed his driver's licence and insurance policy. All to save about $91 a month. "I'm a man, 100 per cent. Legally, I'm a woman," he said. "I did it for cheaper car insurance." David says he's aware the methods he used to become a woman on paper are designed for Albertans who need to correct the gender marker on their identification to reflect who they really are. But he says his target was the insurance industry, not the gender diverse community. "I didn't do it to point out how easy it is to change genders," he said. "I didn't do it to criticize or ridicule transgender or LGBT rights." Banned in EU According to the Insurance Bureau of Canada, gender is just one factor that insurers consider, along with the driver's age, vehicle, driving record and location. In 2011, the European Union's highest court ruled the insurance industry's long-standing practice of charging different rates for men and women "constitutes discrimination." The European Court of Justice ordered the industry to remove gender consideration from auto, life and medical insurance plans, among others. Steve Kee, spokesman for the Insurance Bureau of Canada, says he's heard anecdotal reports of people changing their gender for cheaper insurance, though he doesn't know how often it happens. "If you're going to declare on any document, you need to be truthful," he said. "If not, you're making a fraudulent claim. This could impact you for any future insurance application that you make, or any other aspect of your life." https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/change-gender-identification-insurance-alberta-1.4754416?cmp=rss
  3. Lol, you are such a looser. Of course I still have the dog. She is absolutely fantastic. Has full range of our yard and stays in it all day while we are at work. Has still never made a mess in the house. Even when she had a night of the shits, she made sure to wake us up to let her outside. Never ever barks. Literally has never barked at anyone or anything. Basically the perfect dog and we couldn't be happier.
  4. Exciting start to my weekend. My bil's car just arrived tonight on a truck fresh from the Vancouver port. Another Japanese import in Canada. What a sick car. It is a 2001 Toyota celsior. (Lexus LS 430). 82,000 kms (51,000 miles)Has a 4.3l V8 that is smooth as butter and whisper quite. You can't even tell it is running at idle. It is crazy. It is the base model one but it still comes with loads of cool features. The seats are genuine wool and are super nice. The center fans on the dash freaking oscillate! Not a speck of rust anywhere on it. 4 pot front and 2 pot rear brakes. Definitely an old manish car but is is super roomy and super comfortable. It is a little dirty, but it is to be expected of a 17 year old car that just spent 2 weeks on the ocean. It was $5000 cad (3,800 usd) basically sitting in his drive way. received_10157573618177995(1).mp4
  5. Well I wrote my provincial exam for my third year millwright this morning. 2 months worth of school done today. Walked out of class with a 90% average and third highest marks in the class. Let hope those marks made their way onto the big test lmao. I am not 100% sure on how it went this morning. We shall see on Monday. So lots of beer this weekend before back to work Monday.
  6. Found a complete running used engine at a local "recycler" for $600. I can't even buy the case halves for that price. So as long as I don't see any JB weld anywhere lmao, I will pick it up, set the valves,check/change the timing chain, and check the water pump and slam it in.
  7. Lmao, I wish. I need both case halves so I will have to build the entire engine which sucks
  8. Just a little clink and a little thump against my shoe and that was it. I hope to fix it. Hopefully it won't be a fortune.
  9. Well that atv was short lived. This happened tonight.
  10. Maybe when we start getting a season that is more than 2 weeks locally I will look at getting another sled. Or I start making enough money that mountain sledding isn't such a financial burden lol
  11. Lmao! I did not quit for good. Just for the mean time. I just got really sick and tired of having all that money tied up just to have it sit there and not be able to ride.
  12. Last year my car got rear ended and the co operator's wrote it off. They only offered me $6000. I told them the car was worth way more than that and I would not accept the kind of offer. They said I had to prove it was worth more. So I searched Kijiji and such and sent them a list of examples ranging from $8900-12000. I said my car isn't the worth $12000 but it is definitely a lot more than $6000. So we settled on $8000 and I got my car back. $1600 later my car was back on the road and I pocketed $6000
  13. Ya. It sucks where I am there is very poor sledding. Unless I want to drive 5 hours and take a day off of work and spend $600 before I break anything sledding just isn't worth it. That's why I got rid of the M8 because the atv season was way longer and I can ride from home.
  14. Well my first ride around the neighborhood was good. But other than riding on the roads, snowmobiling is a lot better. You don't get your head pounded through your helmet as bad when you are on a sled
  15. Lmao. I have never owned a dirt bike and I don't think a CRF 450R was the one to be learning on lol.
  16. So this thing hauls lol. Gears are a little short, almost too short but I am not looking for top speed so I can live with it. The neighbors will hate me because this thing has a full Duncan Racing exhaust and it is loud. Sounds like a racecar with all the pops and bangs on the deaccel. Cool for me, shitty for everyone else. I wish I had the stock exhaust for it. Other than that it seems decent.
  17. i google mapped it and it said it could not find a route lol.
