The CTEC 600 by Cat has been a solid engine, you see those sleds with piles of miles all of the time. Not saying its the best 600 or most powerful 600 ever, but give them a little credit here. It's won alot of races and was the reason Cat was sled of the year in 14. Not perfect, but good, and yes I would say, pretty reliable.

Well the Tcat and SRX are special versions of the 998, that come lowered 1", & only come in 137s with 1" tracks. Their setup for high speed. A ZR 9000 / Sidewinder are more common place, however I agree, I do see more Yammy 998s then Cat. I think ppl were more hesitant to go with the Cat, as Cats future was in question kinda sort of maybe, obviously Catalyst flipped the script on that.

Wasn't a version of the 998 made by Yamaha released in 2006 with the 998 150HP 4 Banger? I guess thats a different engine entirely.... I thought Yamaha had been making a 998 Triple and/or 998 4 cylinder mill long before they partnered with in 2014.

Cat and Yamaha have slept together enough times over the years, it's possible some of Yamaha's engine production and engineering teams that provided/built the 998 and 1049 are helping Cat under the table with their new mill. It's all about relationships with real people. Personally I don't care either way but if there is one company to get pointers/advice from on an engine, Yamaha is not a bad buddy to have at camp.

I dunno man. My 09 Nytro XTX was a 144 with a tipped rail, and it felt like a 136 on the trail, but more of a 144 off trail. As far as the 128/129 vs 136/137, the 136/137 is where its at. The machine's just hook up so much better. It's no surprise the Tcat and SRX are only 137's. If I pick up a 1056 or 998 Turbo, it will be alteast a 137....a 129, even with studs, isn't enough meat.
