few pics from quad ride yesterday...seen a big ass bull moose

he looks well fed id say.the pics are zoomed in so pretty grainy but you get the idea.

 

crested the hill he was walking away from me , probably was about 100 feet away when i first came over'.fumbled getting the cell out.

 

anyway, let him go so i smoked a cigarette and turned off the quad to give him time. i drove down after 10 mins or so as i had to pass him to continue on my route.

 

once i got down about another 60 or 70 feet, a cow moose was on the edge of the trees and darted back in , then the bull came back out and turned to face me..stared me down maybe 2 or 3 mins then went into the trees again so i could pass. this wasn't a hunting trip for me, just out for a ride.

 

nice animal.pics dont do it justice, he was a big fellow. thought it was a bear at first walking away he was so girthy, only when i snapped the photo and zoomed in i saw the rack.

 

anyways, thought id share the pics. few others from the ride yesterday.was a nice evening.

I have only seen 4 moose in my life in Northern mn 

But almost every time I ride sleds in WY I see 1 or 2 

I should say every time I rude sleds south if Jackson I see 1 or 2 . Never seen one north of Jackson

Saw a small one once in Pittsburg, NH up by Canadian Border trail. 

At first I didn't know what it was but my buddy behind me was riding 2 up with his Wife and they got a good look at it. 

I was moving glad it was off the trail.

when i was a young teen, me and my buddies were riding up the mountain trail here(not a groomed trail, a glorified walking trail just wide enough for a sled to fit, with maybe 3 or 4 inches on either side of the outside of your ski) so needless to say, you aint turning around.

 

so 3/4s of the way up, a pissed off bull moose walked out on the trail maybe 20 feet in front of us, me of course , up front of the group on my old indy 500. none of our old sleds had reverse. so when we realised this guy aint moving we shut off our sleds.

 

ears pinned back, you could see the steam coming out his big old nostrills, and he was facing us.

 

completely unarmed, we all just sat there in silence, cause there wasnt much else we could do, it was the mooses call if he wanted to charge, but he didn't.

 

that was a long ass 3 to 4 mins, breathing super heavy and groaning i guess you'd say let me tell you. he eventually turned around and headed up the trail. you could see blood coming from its leg. the trail was well beaten hard crust that the animal could stand on instead of busting through the crust and id assume thats what happened to its leg, busting through the off trail crust not as strong as on trail and had no patience or interest in yielding to us 16 year old pricks on sled.

 

moose are very common here.there have been dozens over the years coming out in my childhood backyard. typically passive animals thankfully despite there size. the only real time your in danger is on the road driving, cornering a cow with its calf , or if they feel cornered or threatened in general. usually if theres a route to get the fuck away from you they take it. thats what seperated this memory from id say thousands of sightings of them in my lifetime.

 

we thought we were in for it that time.
