  1. We had to put Finnegan, our golden, down on 2/20...  We got another year and a half longer than we thought we would, but still really sucks. He was the best dog I ever could have hoped for. We have another dog but she's pretty much the wife's. House is really empty now that he's gone.

  2. Both my kids will graduate in April with Fire Protection Associate degrees and zero debt. They will both also have their EMT certificates. My son is working on getting into a wild land fire gig in Montana. My daughter wants to find a department closer to home and maybe go on for her paramedic. They're both on the local volunteer department also. They won't make the $$ a plumber or electrician can make, but they'll have time for a second career if they want one.

I've taken out student loans twice, first for my associates and then my bachelors. Both are paid back in full. The wife and I wanted them to be debt free to start so we paid for their tech degrees. They're good kids and I like to think they're doing things right.

Love History too!   Actually 2 of Custer's brothers died as well as his 18 year old Nephew and brother in law James Calhoun.

By far my favorite history stop was Gettysburg.   Simply amazing.

    Forgot about that, yes.

I'd love to go to Gettysburg. It's on my bucket list but who knows.

Jocko Podcast just did a short series on the civil war and they ended at Gettysburg. Really interesting and a different way of telling the story than I've heard in the past. There are more to come but not sure when. Plus, Ken Burns' Civil War is fantastic.

Went by there quite a few yrs ago going across 212 on way to yellowstone from Sundance wy. Wish I stopped in.

It's worth it in my opinion. I was pretty young when I was there but it definitely made an impression. I've been working on a plan to get my kids out there just to have them learn and experience the place. It's one thing to read about it or watch it on TV. It's another to walk around the places that these things happened after learning about them. See where the people in the books actually fell. It's a powerful thing but then again, I enjoy learning about history.

Been watching and listening to a bunch of documentaries and podcasts on this and find it super interesting.  Amazing how timing and the ability for Reno and Benteen's companies to fortify their position let them fend off basically the same group of warriors that wiped out all of Custer's companies.  If both groups were able to link up and fortify their position the outcome may have dramatically different.

Interesting to how past success in Indian camp raids played into Custer's demise.  Basically in the past when a group charged the village/camp it often shook the organization of the Indian's and chaos would insue allowing a "mop up" group to come in and capture the remaining Indians who didn't flee.   Reno's group was tasked with the charge and Custer's group mop up.   What they didn't realize is the size of the encampment and that this time the warriors would not flee as easily.

I don't recall learning that in 1874 the Native American's requested $70 million (US govt offered them $6 million) for their lands in and around the black hills and the US govt turned them down.

Before anyone goes off on some rant let me state clearly up front I think its awful how the US govt handled native American's even though they were slaughtering each other for 100's of years for no different reason "we" conquered them.   Resources.

Visit the battlefield. It's very interesting. You can walk around and see the markers and get perspective.

When I had my cabin up there north east of Winter I avoided Hayward like the plague… just crammed with people on weekends - that’s not what I went up north for, I want to get away from that.

Totally agree, we only venture into Hayward when necessary. Can be a big pain in the ass. My buddy has a place on Grindstone and we've always stayed just outside of Stone Lake in the past. His wife skis the Birkie every year so we do go in for the finish. We used to walk up and down the street having drinks and food waiting for her to come in, but now, my wife is in a wheelchair so she can't do it anymore. Plus we used to work our way back from Cable stopping at places like the Sawmill and Wayside after dropping his wife off.

In our experience, the places outside of Hayward much prefer sledders because we spend $$ on food and drinks whereas the skiers don't.

@Bontz - I agree on your decision about the sled.  Hope you get the WI sled and can salvage what's left of winter.

Maybe, just maybe, things will start getting back to normal next season and people can ride the sled they ordered.  But, waiting this long is a terrible situation.  Consumers are pissed, but I'm sure the manufacturers are wondering if they can keep numbers in the black long enough for the supply line to straighten itself out.

It's the same in the auto world, unfortunately.  I hit a deer in my brand new F150 on Halloween, and it's still sitting at the body shop, waiting for parts.  I can't trailer my sled anywhere.  Good thing we've had snow locally, but this sucks.

Ride for Wyatt is schedule for Feb. 11 this year, in case any SE MN riders are interested...

I most likely won't have my truck by then, but it has been a fun ride in the past.

Thanks for the link, good cause.

Neither could I, that's why I'm not a nurse, and why these so called nurses are leaving

Lots of reasons nurses and CNAs are quitting. Burnout, constantly understaffed, abusive patients, crushing regulatory standards... The list goes on and on. Pay is a small part of it, just like any other job. You can give people pay raises but if the bullshit continues, the pay only makes it better for so long.

Travel nursing contracts are drying up too, or at least the pay isn't as good as it was during the busier parts of the pandemic. It's a great gig if you aren't tied to a family, etc..., but lots of contracts have been canceled and there's even been investigations of agency $$ gouging.

Nursing and healthcare in general is not the vocation to get into half-heartedly!

    @Deephaven

I decided to post here instead of PM incase anyone else could benefit from the discussion.

We will likely fly into Frankfort as his will asks for his ashes to be distributed @ a sportsman's club 66km ENE of Frankfort.

After that we just want to tour and "vacation" We like smaller towns and villages (not city people). Street festivals and people watching..When we travel we usually rent a car and town hop staying in small boutique hotels.

If you could recommend some towns that would be great. From what I understand we can rent a car and leave that car and take the train back to Frankfort allowing us to see more...any advice is much appreciated.

Follow the Rhein River valley. Lots of small towns, castle, and things to see.

    I’m going to give the ground a try…good stuff!👊🏻🇺🇸

We've tried many of them but keep coming back to the FF.  We don't even bother with scoops anymore, we weigh the grounds instead for consistency! :lolz:

Just Black would be my second choice.

Over Christmas the family had a king crab boil out on the lake. Absolutely delicious. Cost a small fortune for 20 pounds of crab.

Local meat market has it for $65/lb... We have it once a year, and it's tempting now just because we love it, but we'll stick with beef for the new year.
