Governor Puppet hurts veterans, firefighters with meat raffle veto

Last week, Gov. Tony Evers did something I didn’t think was possible: he sunk to a new level of awfulness. This Madison liberal has vetoed middle-class tax cuts, proposed gun confiscation, stolen rural road funding for his pals in Milwaukee and even vetoed a much-needed mental health facility in northern Wisconsin. But this latest low takes the cake.

Evers vetoed a bill that passed on an unanimous voice vote (that means every single Republican and Democrat voted for it) in both houses. And what dangerous piece of legislation was this? A bill to allow non-profit groups like VFWs and fire departments to host paddle wheel meat raffles.

Let’s be clear. Thousands of these groups host these meat raffles and will continue to do so. But because of Nap-and-Spend Tony, they will continue to break the law each time they do it. That’s right. Each time some septuagenarian veteran spins that wheel, thanks to Tony Evers, he is breaking the law. To put it in context, if Evers has his way, that same veteran could smoke all the weed he wants, but spinning that meat wheel is a bridge too far.

More alarming, is the fact that Evers had no idea why he vetoed the bill. Asked by a reporter why he killed a bill that had unanimous support, the Democrat said, “You caught me.” His handlers had to get back to the reporter and explain why the governor vetoed the bill. This guy clearly is not in charge of the executive branch.

It turns out, the veto is the essence of a special interest sellout. He says — or his string pullers say — that he’s concerned it could infringe on the gambling monopoly we have given to the Tribes. Of course the Tribes have turned into just another special interest that will do anything to protect its government-granted monopoly.  

And Evers, apparently, is perfectly fine screwing veterans and volunteer firefighters to cater to a special interest. Yuck. It didn’t take Gov. Puppet long to learn the Special Interest Two Step. It’s just too bad that in so doing he sticks it to some of Wisconsin’s finest.
