  1. irv why would I try to "downplay" it?  I couldn't give one sweet fuck.  I get paid to fix them regardless.  BOHICA is correct, the vacuum pump is the weak link.  Prior to 2014, they used engine vacuum for assist.  Now there is a belt driven vacuum pump off the crankshaft.  Not sure why they went that way, probably because the engine controls are so tight these days that using the vacuum disrupts the running quality of the engine.  Anyhow, when the vacuum pump starts to get weak, it cannot keep up with the demand of multiple brake applications in a short period of time at low engine rpm (idle).  First time I experienced it, I almost hit the lift in my service bay, with long trucks I have to do a four or five point turn to get in, and that was enough to deplete the vacuum in the system, causing hard pedal and low stopping power.  So now they've put a special coverage on the vacuum pumps, made a new EBCM calibration with enhanced diagnostics for when the vacuum level is too low, and apparently added the function of using the ABS pump to provide additional brake pressure if the vacuum system isn't up to the task.  What more would you like them to do?  You drive a fucking Ram for Christ sakes, get off your high horse man.

would this cause the gauges to act funny, when I started it it started through it's self diagnose mode and stopped gauges are stuck at 40mph and 3k on tach and no head/tail lights

Yes if that relay is inoperative it will  not have gauges or lights and the gauges will stick where they were when the relay went open circuit.

That would happen on the 1200s all the time. Wasnt aware it was an issue at all on the 2 strokes

Yeah it’s common in the carb ones anyhow, not sure about the e-tecs. Don’t know why they had to hide it where they did, instead of by the chaincase with the other relay that’s used to charge the battery.  French dipshits.

  4. The airbox slides out super easy.  Just behind the secondary clutch there is a plastic tab you flex to release like a latch, then the thing slides to the clutch side, off the piece that is clamped to the carbs.  Have to rotate and unlock the duct that hooks it to the upper air chamber first though.  Don’t loose the o-ring that’s in there.

  5. Pros use snap on because the truck comes to us, I would not want to think how much of my life would be wasted waiting in line to warranty broken tools at a box store or auto parts place.  But for the average guy, yeah there are lower cost alternatives that will get the job done.

Car lift is next. Few weeks or so.

Just trying to figure out what size I want.

Get a big fuckin’ asymmetrical two post.  Will lift any pickup or anything smaller, and you can open the doors if needed while it’s on the hoist.

  7. IMO this is not an ignition problem.  That engine will run on two cylinders without stalling.  A bad coil or two would result in a rough running engine, flashing engine light and a P0300 code set in the ECM, but not a stall.  When the car stalls driving down the road does the instrument  cluster go dead also?

  8. I promise you this isn’t going to be a wheel bearing/ABS problem.  I realize you probably don’t want to pay a mechanic to mess with it with no guarantee of results.  Dealer has what is called a “data bus diagnostic” tool.  What it does is monitor the various data lines in the car, and tell the technician what one is going down, and even what module is going offline first.  I have fixed problems like this using this tool.  One was a Malibu cutting out for a second, it ended up being the Onstar module taking down the high speed data line.  I made jumper wires and bypassed the module to prove it was the problem.  You might play around with this yourself for a long time and never fix it.  Personally I would pay the dealer to look at it but make sure it goes to one of their top guys, not the newly licensed parts changer.
