  1. Sean I saw the article before it was posted here & was thinking of the insecure helmet charges. I'm sure the rule has been discussed before, but how common is it. I know once I inadvertently hadn't done up mine up, but I would never ride w/ the straps just flapping on purpose. How often is this charge laid?

Police are investigating the death of a snowmobiler who crashed on a trail in Dysart et al early Wednesday afternoon.

Officers with the Haliburton Highlands OPP detachment say the collision happened on OFSC trail E109 around 12:30 p.m.

They say the lone snowmobiler was pronounced dead at the scene.

OPP technical collision investigators and reconstructionists will assist with investigating what happened.

Police say they will provide more details when they are available.

Brother sent me an update & I contacted a friend (from the victim's hometown). Knew the guy (a neighbour) when he was still living in Ontario. Seeing as it's in Dysart et al, the accident was very close to the bottom end of Algonquin by the old Martin Lumber saw mill.

Did a 120 mile loop from Apsley up to Bancroft & Baptiste today. Ran from Ptbo out to Campbellford on Mon'. Haven't run past Hastings for a couple of years. Hoping to stage near Havelock on Mon' or Tues' & head east. Not sure what my total is for this winter. 18" on our snow stick

  3. Does anyone know if the districts have started getting their paper maps? Seeing as the T.O. show was cancelled & didn't go to Sledarama.

In the past I've missed getting the odd 1 map, so contacted those districts.

  4. Sad indeed. I got a message via Faceplant that he had passed away. I never met Gary, but always enjoyed his posts.

A good friend of mine (and a sledder) has cancer. He wasn't able to hunt this fall, but has been doing the preseason work on his sled. His permit came in a couple of weeks ago. He figures it's just be at his parents' farm if anyone visiting wants to ride.

PM Revrnd from here as he is a member. He is the 1st one at the very start of this thread. He is an admin there I believe, but if not, he will definitely help out as he has helped me before. Good luck.

I'm no longer a mod on OC, so I'm not sure who you can direct any inquiries to.

In my experience it's always case by case..   Most modern vehicles do not leak much if any fluids any more .  If there is environmental hazards such as fuel or oil spill the owner of the vehicle is responsible for all costs relating to the clean up.

That pretty much is similar to my thoughts. Its a few litres of motor oil, gear lube & ATF along w/ a tank of gas in Lake Simcoe. I doubt that when it's lifted off the bottom, there would be much 'sheen' on the surface. It's not like it's the Exxon Valdez or a broken pipeline.

The recovery cost to the owner is enough of a fine.

  7. In light of the news segment of the F150 going thru the 'ice' on Lake Simcoe the other day I got into a discussion w/ a person that really doesn't have any knowledge of the situation.  In a case like this & recovery not possible until after ice out what (if any) charges and/or fines would the owner be liable for?

My friend says the fines would be huge. I didn't want to say if there would be fines if the truck was recovered or how 'huge' they would be. Sean do you (or anyone else) have any knowledge in how the MOE and/or MNR deals w/ these 'episodes'?

Unfortunately I think it's only the beginning....they'll all shut down. People will still ride, but it'll be off trail and lake running. Fear there will be a lot of deaths this year. Already had 3 people through the ice on GBay this past weekend. Lots of city folks hunkering down at their cottages with brand new sleds and no where to ride.

    And newbies to the sport...

We've been sledding in the Apsley area since Winter '70 & there have been a few drownings due to bad ice over the years. The most recent pair were a couple that were on Jack's Lake much too soon for the conditions a couple of years ago. The 'narrows' is bad & not safe. Anstruther has had 3 or 4 drownings @ the north end when people drove into the open water (mid winter even in the coldest winters).

You have folks that are new to cottaging or never wintered. They would likely have no idea where the 'no go' areas of their lake are.

Well Sean, what's the official opinion of traveling to sled during the "Lockdown"?

I read stories about OPP pulling trailers over headed north and telling them to go back home.

    What's the deal?

Great question...  we encourage all people to abide by their local health unit and provincial guidelines. While there is a strong encouragement to avoid non essential travel there is no legislation outright banning travel.

We have not told anyone to turn around nor have we been directed to do so.  The main covid issues we seem to deal with are "large gatherings"   Many of you will remember several years ago when people were saying charges were being laid for trailer hitches sticking out without trailers attached. Simply not true.  There's always a group that likes to create that divide and spreads misinformation. This is no different.

After reading the posts, I was talking to the neighbour at our woodlot on Sat' & said that I'd had the sled out on the property.

Neighbour: Did you hear what happened in Tweed?

Me (expecting news of a sledding fatality): No was there an accident?

Neighbour: No apparently they're fining and turning people around with snowmobile trailers.

Me: I'm not sure if that's legit or not (and I told him what you had said.

I'm guessing Tweed is in you territory Sean? This is getting really stupid. A lot of these 'I heard it from a cousin who's friend told him he saw it on Faceplant' stories...

You make very valid points. The doo rag or balaclava really do nothing to change the fitment and protective qualities of the helmet. Ball caps however change it greatly. It causes the helmet to remain loose and insecure. That meets the threshold and would be considered a violation.

    Sean

Thanks! The helmet looked like 1 of those $45 Crappy Tire open face versions...

Some people go all out for the best helmet (in their mind) that money can buy, while others go for the 'cheapest bucket' that they can find...

  11. Speaking of helmets, here's a new one. (As a cyclist I shake my head when I see 'riders' wearing a ball cap under their helmet. Not really sure how that would work out on impact)

Now to today, two older couples ride by on 4 Harleys. The second 'woman' and I use that term loosely, was wearing a baseball cap under her open face helmet. We've heard grumbling about the police checking helmet straps at spot checks on the trail. Discussion has gone back and forth about whether this is for checking for helmet secureness and/or booze on the operators breath.

Now to my question Sean, what would your opinion be of a motorcycle rider w/ this kind of 'headgear'? I've seen guys wearing doo rags or bandanas but I don't think they'd really affect how secure the helmet would be on the head (much like a balaclava in the winter). I'm thinking that it would be difficult to make sure the helmet was tight on the noggin with an irregularly thickness in between.

  12. Dumb question of the day.

    Quoted from Faceplant:

    Quote

steel toes are actually against the law to wear while driving , but yes appropriate footwear is needed

I've been driving since '77 or '78 & never heard of this until today. Barefoot yes.

File this along with the "it's illegal to leave the trailer hitch installed" nonsense?

In our area they're repairing/adding sand and gravel to the rail trail. It's $100K for the work and the atv club is footing half the cost. They do quite a bit of trail work every year

That's not the EOTA though. You can 'ride' the length of the Hastings Heritage trail & you'd be hard pressed to see where they've done anywork.

I think the EOTA caused some issues w/ the implementation of the Hav-A-Ball loop that the OFSC was planning last winter.

    Hey Odot1,

I wonder if you could shed some light what is required (and where) to ATV in the Gilmour area.

As of yesterday the EOTA and the OFATV are no longer having discussions with working together.  I was hoping these two organizations with figure things out.
I did not want to asked either organization these question but rather a third party who has a good understanding of the situation and especially since your SAVE team provides coverage in this area.

And as always, you are very knowledgeable and helpful!

Both organizations have some of the same trails on their maps so it is confusing what pass is truly needed.  For example, the rail trail into Coe Hill and some of the trails east of Hwy 62 which I believe are on crown land.
My understanding is the heritage rail trail is kind of private property but leased to the EOTA. So a pass is required for it.  But I have been told that many other listed trails, that are on crown land, really do not require a pass.

I want to support ATVing  but I am not sure what these organizations are offering me.  I am a big flag waver of the OFSC and see great value with my trail pass.  So i see the bennefit with having club(s) support.

Do I truly need one of their passes to ride on crown land and municipal/forest access roads in this area?  I do not need a pass when I drive my truck on them so I not sure why  a pass is needed.

It seem like there is a cash grab going on with not much effort going towards the trail system.  They barely put up any trail signs just lines on an on-line map.
I wish to be informed and compliant when out riding in this area.

It is tough to support when I need 4 different passes to ride each year.   I suspect others are the same which must result with people taking the chance and running without passes.

    Thanks

    Steve

    X2 on both bolds.

The km markers & the stop signage needs a major refurbishment.

The decking on the Heritage Trail on most bridges is in awful shape. I think even though the carbides & studs cause the majority of damage, the sled clubs are hesitant to repair the decking because the ATVers see the most usage of the trail.

The only project I recall the EOTA being involved in was replacing the bridge by the Bancroft airport a few years ago.

A few years ago an ATV club in Havelock was trying to 'take over' the E107 towards Apsley. I can't see how that would help ATVing in that area. It's on Crown land and there are no bridges. There is no grooming and I can't imagine landowners would want an ATV trail thru their property especially if there were any wet areas (read soon to be mudholes).

I've ridden along the ATV trails and seen where people just ride over trees w/o any attempt to clear the obstacle. Last summer I should've waited for a large group to catch up to me. They could've helped haul brush off the trail as I cleared a large balsam that had fallen across the trail. As it was the came up to me just as I was throwing the saw in the back of the Ranger. I'm sure they knew what I had been doing, but none of them even stopped to say thanks. I imagine they had come up from Nephton & would've known a tree had been on the trail.

    End of rant.

  15. There was a traffic accident a week or so ago on Highway 7 on the outskirts of Peterborough @ a set of traffic lights. One of the drivers was charged w/ 'Failure to avoid an accident' (or something  like that). Can you clear that up?

  16. On 1/22/2020 at 12:56 PM, odot1 said:

The driver was both prohibited and suspended.

The suspensions could result from various reasons from unpaid fines to failure to pay family support.  It is a provincial level offence.  The prohibition is a criminal court order not to drive basically anything anywhere.  A much more serious offence and involves a 45 day impediment of the vehicle being driven.

Prohibition is ordered in court following a CRIMINAL code conviction for any sort of driving offence.  Think dangerous, impaired etc...

Lemme know if that clears it up or makes it more confusing!!

    Sean

I was only thinking of 'suspended' (I didn't realize it was termed a 'prohibition') due to an impaired conviction. I had forgotten about the provincial suspensions due to unpaid fines etc. So those suspensions would apply to motor vehicles as well.

    Thanks again.
