Well-known local community activist Maryam Monsef will be seeking the nomination as the Liberal candidate for the federal Peterborough-Kawartha riding.

Current federal Liberal candidate Cammie Jaquays issued a press release on Tuesday, February 3rd, to announce that she is withdrawing from the Liberal nomination race.

At the same time, Monsef also issued a press release indicating she plans to make an announcement on Wednesday, February 4th at 10 a.m. at Sam’s Deli about her “electoral intentions”.

Jaquays launched her campaign in July of 2014. She is withdrawing from the race and placing her support behind Monsef’s campaign.

“I support Maryam’s bid to seek the Liberal nomination because I believe she is the right choice to be our new M.P. and that she brings an excellent skillset that will contribute to a Liberal victory in the next election,” Jaquays states in her press release.

Fellow candidate Bob Hall issued a press release thanking Jaquays for her efforts.

“It must have been a difficult decision for Cammie,” Hall states. “She put enormous effort into the campaign over the past 10 months. Stepping forward to seek the nomination wasn’t a decision that was made lightly by any of the candidates who made that commitment almost a year ago to get ready for the next federal election.”

Jaquays’ campaign director joins Hall’s team

A press release issued by Hall’s campaign on Wednesday, February 4th announced that Jaquays’ campaign director, Mat Crough, has joined Hall’s team.

Crough is a long-time presenter on TVCogeco, working on shows such as Politically Speaking and on election coverage. He has been involved with many volunteer boards in the community.

“I’m proud to have the support of Mat,” Hall says. “Mat is a dedicated Liberal who brings his enthusiasm and experience to the team.”

Crough has worked on municipal, provincial and federal election campaigns. He’s currently a director of the Peterborough-Kawartha Federal Liberal Riding Association.

“Bob Hall has experience, skill and determination,” Crough says. “We need those characteristics to represent our community in Ottawa. Bob has what it takes to win and be our next MP.”

    About Maryam Monsef

A relative newcomer to politics, 30-year-old Maryam Monsef ran for Mayor of Peterborough in the 2014 municipal election. Her mayoral campaign resonated with many citizens, and she was only narrowly defeated by incumbent Daryl Bennett.

Originally from Afghanistan, Monsef came to Canada when she was 11 years old, along with her widowed mother and her two sisters. Her mother decided to move her family from Afghanistan due to the repressive Taliban regime and they came to Peterborough as the family had relatives here.

Monsef grew up in Peterborough, where she attended Grove and James Strath Public Schools before entering the arts program at Peterborough Collegiate Vocational School. She went on to attend Trent University where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. She’s worked at Fleming College, the Community Foundation of Greater Peterborough, and the New Canadians Centre, as well as Trent University.

Along with Jessica Melnik, she founded the Red Pashmina Campaign, in which proceeds from the sale of red pashminas are directed to advancing education and educational opportunities for Afghan women and their families. Both Monsef and Melnik received the 2013 YMCA Peace Medallion in recognition of the Red Pashmina Campaign.

Monsef also represented the Red Pashmina Campaign at the United Nation’s Commission on the Status of Women. She has sat on the boards of both the YWCA of Peterborough and Haliburton and the Ontario Public Interest Research Group (OPIRG).

Was there some backroom dealing to get her to quit? By who's standards would Monsef's experience would be considered an "excellent skillset"? I think her skillset consists of being female and her family's back story.

  2. Fail, thanks for posting the link, I had seen the teaser earlier on Sun'. I wonder if people wear offensive costumes just to piss off the hand wringers that pretty much find offence in everything in day to day life. More or less a great big middle finger to the elites.

The woman that complained to Home Depot about that Peeper Creeper thing must be a real fun person to be around.

Next up the war of Christmas. Mind you we all heard about Diwali over the weekend (even in the linked video).

Didnt the MSM repeat the same old same old about Duffy during the election even though no new details were forthcoming?

Pt sounds like you moved to Apsley. Same thing w/ the welfare. Theres a county housing building here & they ship the neer do wells from Ptbo to it. Most of my friends that grew up here moved away to find work. Then you get asshats w/ a family (and no skills) moving here. Then they bitch that they cant find work.

I sit here wondering why Monsef's story has not made a bigger splash among the Canadian Press. It has been covered in the L.A. Times as well as in Iran. I understand anything coming out of Iran is probably is state supplied  propaganda but they are at least publishing something. Any chance that the liberal friendly media at home are afraid to touch this one for fear of being accused of racism ?

The local media were her cheerleaders & the MSM doesn't like saying anything bad about the Liberals. Other than Justine's appearance in Medicine Hat before the by-election (which all the networks covered) did you hear any results? No, it was like the by-election didn't happen.

The whole Monsef situation doesn't fit the narrative of change (from the bad old Conservatives) or "sunny ways". Other than seeing her on CHEX going on about her Red Pashmina campaign or some announcement about the New Canadians centre, most people didn't have a clue who she was. I've gotten ripped on the various Ptbo media Faceplant pages by some clown that owns a stand up paddle board business in the city. He says I shouldn't be so "negative" about her. When I asked if she was doing anything about the situation w/ GM possibly closing up shop in Oshawa, he posted what did that have to do w/ Ptbo. I showed him the survey that showed GM is the largest private sector employer in the Ptbo area. He shut up after that. Pretty much the rest of the employment are health care or education. GE is a small fraction of what it used to be.

I'm glad there are others on Faceplant that see problems w/ this scam. Oh the sheep will say, "Oh what does it matter? She didn't do what Del Mastro did..."

  5. CP24 was saying the Liberals plan to remove a rule that Harper had put in place. The old regular rule stated that a new immigrant would have to stay w/ their sponsoring spouse for 2 years. According to CP24, this rule will be removed.

The chap that owns the general store has a racket going on where he has a new couple of Asian descent working for him for 6 months. They disappear and another couple arrives to repeat the cycle.

A high-powered group of external advisers is calling for a dramatic increase in Canada's immigration levels, but Immigration Minister John McCallum says that might be too ambitious.

McCallum said Wednesday he's read the report by the Advisory Council on Economic Growth that calls for a 50-per-cent increase in targets to 450,000 people a year.

The measure would target skilled, entrepreneurial newcomers in an attempt to stimulate economic growth.

The 14-member panel, chaired by Dominic Barton of the firm McKinsey and Co., is to deliver a set of recommendations to Finance Minister Bill Morneau on Thursday.

McCallum said meeting the target suggested by Barton's group would be costly and might not find broad national support.

"The figure he gives is a huge figure," McCallum said. "But this is not a universal view across the country."

Discussions are continuing and the government will announce immigration targets for 2017 next month, McCallum added.

McCallum's cabinet colleague, Economic Development Minister Navdeep Bains, told The Canadian Press on Wednesday that he's "worked very closely" with Barton's panel, and favours increased immigration levels. But he stopped short of endorsing the target in Barton's report.

"Clearly he's demonstrating an opportunity for Canada," Bains said. "We value our diversity, we value our multicultural society and we recognize immigration is an opportunity to create jobs."

    The need for skilled labour

Bains said the government would need to sell the idea of higher immigration levels to the public.

"We, as a government, need to focus on communicating the benefits of growing the economy and part of that growth is investing in people and part of that equation is immigration."

Bains said bringing in more skilled workers is part of the government's broader agenda that includes investing in research and development, creating jobs and helping companies grow.

A survey released by Canadian Manufactures and Exporters said the most pressing challenge facing its member companies is "attracting or retaining skilled labour."

The response came from a survey and roundtable discussions with 1,300 member companies.

Matthew Wilson, the organization's senior vice president, said manufacturers have traditionally looked beyond Canada's border to find skilled workers.

"If we can expand that, that's good," he said in an interview.

    Slower growth ahead

But the government needs to do more to make sure the immigrants they allow into Canada actually have skills that are needed, Wilson added.

"Just bringing in more immigrants isn't going to solve the skills-gap problem if they don't have the skills Canadian companies need."

The continuing need to address the country's sluggish economy was underscored Wednesday as the Bank of Canada downgraded its growth prediction.

The bank's latest outlook projected a real GDP expansion of 1.1 per cent this year, down from its earlier 1.3 per cent forecast.

Governor Stephen Poloz listed immigration as "one of the ingredients" for helping to reverse declining growth.

I can't believe McCallum had those thoughts. He must be drying out. Has anyone ever explained how "diversity" has helped Canada? I don't ever remember it being mentioned during Oshawa's Fiesta Week during its heydey.

Some talk on the CBC this morning & the reporter said most immigrants settle in the big cities, which doesn't help declining populations in rural & small town Canada. The reason those populations are declining is that there are no jobs there. Why would it make sense to plunk immigrants down in areas of unemployment? In Apsley, Asians already own the motel/restaurant and the "general store". I can't think of any other businesses they'd be interested in.

A hell of a lot better qualified for a position of responsibility like an MP or Minister than a window washer

Raitt comes across as someone you wouldn't want to be on the wrong side of. Monsef has the personality & demeanor of a kindergarden teacher.

Yeah he can ramble on when asked a question & talk in circles if that's what you call being a great MP. Crypt keeper LOL, I'm more inclined to call him the bar keeper AKA Foster Brooks.

The bold applies to that useless senile old f3ck Chiarelli who as energy minister basically insulted the A-G Bonnie Lysyk. The Toronto Star had an interview w/ him when he was minister of transport (Don't you love it when they bounce these asshats from ministry to ministry?). When asked about raising the speed limits or going after left lane bandits on the 400 series highways, he said & I quote, "I'm not a car guy."

My confusion. A bit of a coincedence (to me) that Tinker's transmission was the same "basic" confifguration.

  11. Never did I say that only business owners qualify to be MPs. I'm saying someone w/ no experience in the private sector is a bad choice. Has she ever had to work within a budget? Has she had to deal w/ deadlines on on a project.? In case you missed it here is her resume. How being the losing mayoral candidate looks good, I don't know. Mind you she's well aware of "job churn" as mentioned by her colleague, Finance Minister. I haven't heard any explanation as to the reason for her short terms of employment, seemed to jump from 1 job to the next.

I still have not met anyone outside the city of Peterborough that voted Liberal

I would think it would be hard for a person that was gainfully employed to support anyone that has skated from 1 public service job to another year after year. Discussing her w/ a friend and I said her longest time at a single job was administrative assistant @ Trent U. "So yo're saying she was a secretary?" was his reply. I just shrugged my shoulders. Oh & she ran a window washing franchise for a year.

Guess in the Canadian Business Hall of Fame she should rank up there w/ RS McLaughlin & Timothy Eaton.

Career opportunity It was as she in now a MP in Canada and on the gravy train.

    who would have thought?

Pretty sad when our elected officials making policy decisions that impact our lifes have no business or financial experience.  Look at Trudeau, Wynne.  Both teachers who have never allowed a tax payer dollar to go unspent.

Monsef is the "poster child" for this. Her CV is incredibly thin. How anyone would think she was a worthy candidate & would make a good MP, I have no idea. It would be interesting to see the polling station results. I'm pretty sure outside of Ptbo, the CPC candidate won the polls. She went after the student vote & got it. Now we're stuck w/ an MP as bad as, if not worse than the used car salesman Del Mastro.

Rather than society as a whole having to change because of a minority of whiners, maybe the whiners should grow a pair. Love the Faceplant memes that list the "bad" things kids of the 60s & 70s were exposed to. Any of us that grew up in that era would probably have to visit our parents in jail by today's standardss.

LOL on US Weekly covering the election. I doubt their average reader votes.

  16. US politicians have been questioned on their "massaged" Vietnam War experience. Why should this lightweight get a pass? If it hadn't been for the Del Mastro nonsense in the riding & the ABC "movement" across Canada, she would've been neck & neck w/ the NDP candidate for 2nd place in the riding. Plus the Ptbo councillor who lost the nomination to her wasn't impressed. Not sure what his issue was (instant party members voting?).

Other than her failed attempt @ running for mayor w/o any experience on council, most people had never heard of her. I wonder if the whole mayoral bid was just to get her name out there in advance of the federal election? I do recall seeing her yammering on about some Red Pashmina campaign on CHEX.

Her resume is thinner than a Captain Canuck comic book.

  17. Up to the show & got all but 1 of the latest maps (missing D1 as they only had 2016 maps) & will start going thru them to update the database. If anyone can confirm the status of any of the listed businesses the help would be greatly appreciated. I'll post when the online info has been updated.

Below is a list of lodgings that I can't determine if they are open or not. If you can update me via a post or PM, it would be greatly appreciated.

Also while doing Google searches for these places, I'm getting hits for them in listings on other snowmobile websites. Only the database in my link is being updated on a regular basis.

Thanks to those of you that have messaged me or posted updates over the years.
