A friend of mine works for a company that takes him all over the world. He told me that when in South America he rides in a vehicle with his interpreter. His interpreter told him to keep the windows closed in the vehicle that he is in because people have been known to reach in to a vehicle and steal whatever is not secured. Apparently quite a few thieves in South America.
