10 years ago Steve Scheuring predicted the downfall of snocross.

SNOW GOER: How long have people been kicking around this idea that changes were need to Pro Open? SCHEURING: “Well, sometime during the course of the winter the battlecry came that we have to do something or the sport is going to die. [Proponents were saying] ‘We’ve got to get more Pros,’ and we were first approached about it by a couple of people who asked what we thought at about mid-season I would guess, and I told them what I thought and what I felt. My opinions are based on 20-some years of being involved in the snocross world. I tried to explain to them that, in my opinion, the way they were directing was not going to change the outcome [the way] they were hoping for, because we’d been down this road five years ago when the mantra was, ‘If we get rid of the mod motors and get a stock motor with a mod pipe on it, and get rid of carbon fiber and titanium and aftermarket pieces, there are going to be people beating down the door to run Pro.’ And, it backfired, we ended up with fewer Pros than we had five years ago. So, we’ve already been down this road and that’s not going to increase the number of drivers. You might see one to four more start out the season this year but a year from now, it’s going to be the same. And, I don’t know if going through this whole minutia of changes to see four more drivers out there is valuable enough.

“From what I hear from a fan, I’m sure they would rather see 12 to 15 custom, badass Pro Mod sleds out there than 16 or 18 stock sleds [identical to those that] that just ran 15 minutes earlier in the Pro Lite class. That’s why they come to the races. Unless they have family [in racing] and there is good racing all day. But when you talk to nine out of 10 fans, they are there for the mods and they are there for Tim Tremblay and Lincoln [Lemieux], Tucker [Hibbert], Ross [Martin], Kody Kamm – that’s the focal point. It’s no different than going to a monster truck race to watch the monster trucks and not the stock trucks; it’s no different than going to the NHRAs to watch the top fuelers and a bunch of funny cars. It’s the pinnacle that they come to see, and that’s why we’re at the climax of the show – at the end.”

Steve Scheuring: Snocross Rule Change Is Bad For Snocross...

As the owner and creator of one of the first big “super teams” of modern snocross racing 20 years ago, Steve Scheuring has earned the right to have strong

want to compare the number of competitors at the first SX race of the year to the number of Iron Dog competitors this coming year? I'd offer a bet but everyone here and their cousins know you're a non paying welcher.

Snocross is dying and so is the sport of snowmobiling. There isn’t enough youth getting in the sport to pull big numbers of racers out compared to the 90s or even 10 years ago. A bunch of 40+ year olds are too old to race anything and that is probably 90% of new snowmobile buyers

It is a thing I do not really get, that is the thing.

If you look at the numbers in junior classes, those are pretty dismal, and those are your future semi-pro and pro racers.

15 years ago, it wasn't uncommon that vintage had yuge numbers, 20-25-30-35+ racers. Now they are lucky to get 2 or 3. At least classics is getting some OK numbers.

All forms of racing are down. First 1 Lunger 100 I ran had like 180+ racers across 3 classes, might have been pushing 200? Now I don't think they get more then 80 to 100 across 5 classes. I just don't get it.

I would rather go ride than watch someone ride. I’ve been to my fair share of races over the years, that’s just where I am at this point in my life. And this is the aging of the sport… rather unfortunate. Had a conversation with a couple younger guys tonight and they said snowmobiling is fun as hell, just not in the bank account…

$500 and you can go racing! If you are lucky with the sled cost, that $500 might even cover the entry fee to the first race.

Ancient history. A bunch don’t have rides for 26-27 or retired. Typical swing and a miss.

I predicted it more than 20 years ago. It gets boring real quick with these 30 second lap times, basically just going around a circle with a couple of jumps thrown in. And on the amateur level, you show up at the track 6 o’clock in the morning Saturday and don’t leave until 5 o’clock in the afternoon Sunday. And in between that, you’re basically standing around freezing your nuts off most of the time. I did four or five races back in the day and I quickly realized I had more fun, just riding my sled instead of standing around most of the weekend.

I can't speak for everyone else, but for me the tracks are incredibly uninspiring. If they had cool tracks I could get into it.

not untrue, the little bull rings aren't super exciting but the bigger tracks with a bit of turning right mixed in with the left is pretty good. idk the last time you attended a SX in person but the PL and Pro class sleds are plenty f'ng loud (right @fortune46x ? lol) , the holes are enormous and the kids racing go f'ng huge.
