Obama Added $1.17 Trillion Per Year To The National Debt Over 8 Years. Only 2 Presidents Have Added More.

Screenshot_20260902-052039_Chrome.pngMethodology Notes

Nominal dollars, not inflation-adjusted. A dollar added in 1981 is not equivalent to a dollar added in 2024. Unadjusted figures mechanically favor recent presidents because both the economy and the debt are far larger now.

Inauguration-day snapshots. Figures use Total Public Debt Outstanding on inauguration day, per Congressional Research Service tracking. Fiscal-year-end (Sept. 30) snapshots yield slightly different numbers.

First-year figures are partly inherited. Budgets and appropriations run on a lag. Early months of any term operate under levels set by the prior administration and Congress.

Congress controls appropriations and revenue law. These figures describe what happened during each presidency, not sole responsibility.

Unusual term boundaries. Presidents such as Nixon and Ford have years-in-office numbers that are standard term-boundary approximations.

Obama Added $1.17 Trillion Per Year To The National Debt...

Raw totals tell one story about Obama's debt legacy, but ranking presidents by annual pace reshapes the list in ways most people never see. Three terms sit above him, and two belong to the same presid

Trump is only 590 days into his second term... so there's plenty more wasteful spending yet to come.

Yep, the interest doubled with Obama. BTW get it through, it is a SPENDING problem. 6.5% is what the revenue we have increases on average. That is the only number needed to figure out how to slowly get rid of the debt

It seems to escape you that doesn’t matter what my solution is. If the Congress can’t come together and agree on spending cuts, all we’re doing is throwing rocks at each other. And laying it on Trump or any individual president for that matter, is nothing more than your typical Daily TDS.

Actually you just laid it on Trump. It is very simple. The fundamental job of the president is to bring congress together and agree on the right things. That is called leadership.

The 90’s just hit different.

There has not been any measurable bipartisanship since the Clinton years, but you knew that right? And let’s be honest. Trump could cure cancer, and the Democrats would find a reason to want to impeach him over it.

just spending cuts... no raise in revenue?

how about a balanced budget?

we both know Congress isn't going to do jack shit, especially a D Congress... so what's the R's excuse?

I don't lay any of this solely on Trump and have said countless times this mountrain of debt is due to bipartisan spending with no payment plan and bipartisan kicking of the $40T can down the road

So he was the wrong guy and it was stupid to elect him. Got it.

The Budget hasn't been the same since about 1994. Now it's all CR's and huge all encompassing pork filled spending bills

yet let's not forget...

At the end of fiscal year 1999, the total U.S. national public debt was approximately $5.656 trillion. [1]

Key Details from 1999

  • Debt Held by Public: About $3.667 trillion to $3.715 trillion depending on the exact month.

  • Budget Status: The federal government ran a budget surplus of about $126 billion that year.

  • Debt-to-GDP Ratio: Around 58% to 59% of the gross domestic product. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

the blue font might send Woolie into a seizure but wtf is a budget surplus?

The United States last had a full fiscal year budget surplus in 2001. [1]

Key Details

  • Fiscal Year 2001: This was the final year of a four-year streak of federal budget surpluses running from 1998 through 2001.

  • Presidency: The budgets were achieved during the administration of President Bill Clinton, with FY 2001 overlapping into the start of George W. Bush’s administration.

  • Since 2001: The federal government has run a budget deficit every single completed fiscal year. [1, 2, 3, 4]

how on earth did we allow our elected officials to go from a 58/59% DtGDP to nearly 100%+ of DtGDP?

The United States gross federal debt-to-GDP ratio is approximately 122.6% as of early 2026, while the debt held by the public sits at roughly 98.7% to 100% of GDP. [1, 2, 3]

Current U.S. Debt-to-GDP Breakdown

  • Total Public Debt to GDP: ~122.6% (Q1 2026 data from the St. Louis Fed FRED Database).

  • Debt Held by the Public to GDP: ~98.7% (Q1 2026 data from the St. Louis Fed FRED Database).

  • Historical Context: Total public debt surpassed the total size of the U.S. annual gross domestic product, a threshold last primarily seen following World War II. [1, 2, 3, 4]

Yes spending cuts. Trump tried to increase revenues with tariffs, but karen, sheephaven all rally against it. So just spending cuts
