Last week, we reported that GM issued a safety recall that included a long list of vehicles powered by the 6.2L V8 L87 engine. The problem has to do with connecting rod and crankshaft components with unspecified manufacturing defects. The recall applies to the Chevy Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, Chevy Tahoe/Suburban, GMC Yukon/Yukon XL, and Cadillac Escalade/Escalade ESV, but only from the 2021-2024 model years.

This made us wonder: why isn’t the 2025 model year included in the recall? We asked General Motors, and here’s what they told us: “A series of crankshaft and connecting rod manufacturing improvements implemented on or before June 1^st, 2024, addressed contamination and quality issues. Model-year 2025 vehicles were built after these improvements and are not included in the recall.”

GM’s decision to issue a recall follows a series of lawsuits, investigations, and engine replacements regarding consistent problems with the 6.2L V8 L87 engine. For reference, the General Motors recall number is N252494001.

“GM will voluntarily recall certain 2021-2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Tahoe, Suburban, GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, Yukon XL, Cadillac Escalade, and Escalade ESV models equipped with 6.2L L87 engines to resolve manufacturing issues affecting some engines,” General Motors said in a statement to GM Authority last week. “The safety and satisfaction of our customers are the highest priorities for the entire GM team, and we’re working to address this matter as quickly as possible.”

General Motors trucks and SUVs affected by the recall will be inspected for manufacturing defects. Vehicles that pass inspection will receive an engine oil and filter change, this time using high-viscosity 0W-40 Mobil 1 Supercar oil. The owner’s manual for L87-equipped trucks calls for 0W-20 oil. The oil fill cap will also be replaced (to reflect the new oil type). It’s unclear what happens if an affected truck does not pass inspection, but an engine replacement is likely.

If you own one of these vehicles with the problematic V8, General Motors will notify you and give you instructions on what to do next.

Between this and the tariffs, get your wallet out.

GM will be begging for a bailout with the "to big to fail" crowd.

The older 6 speed transmissions from both ford and GM were pretty good. The new 10 speeds have been a bit of a nightmare, although ford’s version tends to be a bit more reliable. The tariffs will result in even more cost cutting and shitification

So far so good with this Powerboost. Really good power for a half ton truck, and getting 22-23 mpg last 2000 miles. Trans and motors seem to have gotten sorted out pretty good. I wanted to like Rams inline 6, but my son in laws on his 3rd turbo and apparently even the hemis seem to be having plenty of cam issues with the afm bullshit.

I've been renting Tacomas and Pro-4X's when I travel.

After driving both, I'm not sure why anyone would buy a new Tacoma over a new Frontier. The Tacoma feels much cheaper.

Ya looks like they did solve it. I really liked the frontier when I test drive one before I bought my 3rd gen taco. It was new model at the time and had those trans recalls that was really the only reason I went with a used taco. I agree the new tacos are trash definitely aren’t going to last near as long as the older na ones also why I didn’t get one of those. Frontier is the last of the mid size trucks that’ll actually be reliable long term imo.
